Message: The difference is when you put your truck in 4-Hi the transfer case engages to provide power to the front wheels with the same final drive gear ratio as 2-Hi. When you put your truck in 4-Lo the transfer case engages and reduces your final drive ratio to provide more power to your drivetrain. It changes/reduces the ratio to all four wheels. Use 4-Lo with caution and at low speeds because the extra power can break things in a hurry. Also if you have an automatic trans it has to be in neutral with the truck stopped before the transfer case will shift into 4-Lo. I assume it's the same shifting with standard transmissions also. Hope this helps

Message: Lost,
In regards to your question about driving in 4 high all the time the answer is this: Four wheel drive is designed to operate in low traction situations(as I am sure you know). Driving around in 4wd on say, dry pavment is very hard on CV-joints and U-joints because of somthing called driveline wind up. Drive line wind up is not a problem when going in a strait line, but when you turn, all the wheels which no longer want to turn at the same rate are being held to that by your 4wd system. All that force is then transferred to your drive-line and is really hard on the equipment. Most vehicles that advertise full time or on demand 4wd use viscous couplings and only engage all the wheels when spin is detected(aka low traction situations). Depending on the year of your truck, Dodge may have added a non-locking transfer case option, but you definitely will not find me driving my 93 on road in 4wd.
