Message: Baby D,
I don't know exactly what Dakota you own but it would be unlikely for you to have a limited slip diff or a locker in the front of your Dakota.
If you go 4wheeling just find a rock that you can drive one of your front wheels up on to the point where the other wants to lift off the ground. If the truck has a locker the front wheel that is not on the rock will lift off the ground without spinning. If you don't have a locker the front wheel not on the rock will spin before it ever gets off the ground.
I hope you can understand what I wrote.

Message: I am not sure, but I think that some of the newer model years have a low speed traction control, optional from the factory. Otherwise the Dakota front end does not have a limited slip unit or a locker. Don't try looking for one either because it doesn't exist.

Message: It does so exist... All you have to look for is a locker for a dana 35. Which is in the front axle of the dak.

Message: Tony,
Is that a Dana 35 for all years? Just some? I have a 2001 4x4 and have been trying to figure it out for a while. Speaking of that, if the front is a Dana 35, what model is the rear? I am looking into lockers as well.
Thanks for any info!

Message: The locker is made for DANA 35, which, i believe, doesnt change for the years. More trucks than dakotas use DANA diffs, including the 35 model. You just have to look up a locker for a DANA 35 and that would work with the gears you have set-uyp in there. For the rear, it's a Chrysler 8.25". So then you would look up lockers for diff model Chrysler 8.25 (8 1/4, depending how they write it). Again I think the gear ratio matters to the locker, so just make sure it will fir that gear ratio. Hope this helps...

Message: Ok it looks like we need some clarification here There is NO locker available for the 2000+ Dakotas That's the year that the front end was switched to a Chrysler front end and no longer uses the Dana. For those of you that have a older model truck you can get a locker for the front end.
Now saying this I can NOT remember if it was infact 2000 that they switched but I know my '01 has the Chrysler front end.

Message: I seem to be having a problem with the front end in mine. I think my truck was built with spare parts. One tech looked at it and said it was a chry. another said it was a dana. I have a mid year 99. Must of been built on a late friday afternoon. There is a long list of problems that go with what front diff. Like I use a 99 Ram wiring harness for the plow, and for some reason, the driveshaft uses full size u-joints.

Message: Dave, you should be able to look on your front differential cover and it should say if it is a dana on the cover. As for the LS, I havent seen one for the newer trucks. However truckperformance.com has 2 manufacturers that offer lockers for the front of 2000 and lower dakotas. Sorry for all you 2001 guys but thats when they changed front differentials so youll have to wait a tad bit longer.

Message: I have a '99 dodge ram. Im in the process of rebuilding the transfercase. Before I took my transfercase off I put my truck up on a houst and put it in 4 wheel drive. My passenger tire would spin but my drive tire would not spin. Does anybody now if that tire is just on locking or is the front diff. a possi?
Thanks Ryan

Message: Here is the clarification that you all need. I have been looking for a tall gear set for my 2000 CC and have learned quite a bit. To begin, DC started using their front diff at the end of 99'. This diff is a 205mm (8.2"). The only gear sets currently available are the ones that the factory offer. Even in the aftermarket, they are using DC gear sets. There are no traction aids available, as of yet, for the front diff. The rear diff could be one of either a DC 8.25" or a DC 9.25". There is no rhyme or reason as to what trucks got which diff. My friend has a QC 4.7 with an 8.25" and 11" drums, I have a CC 4.7 with a 9.25" and 9" drums. Both rear diffs have a bunch of gear sets and traction aids available. If you are interested in finding out for sure what axles you have in the front and rear of your truck, simply open the glove box and check out the sticker that is in there. It says on it which front and which rear axle you have. It will also tell you what gear ratio you have. There is a silver lining in all of this for those of us that have late 99'-up trucks with the 205mm front diff. That is because DC is also puting the 205mm in the 2002-up RAM 1500. This will help generate interest in getting some more product available for all of us. Hope this has been of some help.

Message: Well I have a 97' and if that front end aint got a locker in it, I DON'T NEED ONE! I've pulled out numerous tree stumps and it turns all 4 tires. I've also done burnouts in 4 low. I know not a good idea but it left 4 black marks 10ft long. All were just as dark and just as long. If you try to turn on pavement in 4WD the steering wheel shimmy's, the tires chirp and the whole truck shakes.
