In the past month I have made two really good wheeling trips. One to the mountains to play in the snow, and one to the beach to play on the dunes. The Procomp Xterrain tires have really impressed me in both cases. The did great in the snow until I got high centered tring to get off the road to avoid a chevy blazer that had lost a hub and only had 2wd.
In the sand they were equally as impresive. I didnt air down, and they just glided over and through the sand. I went to SandLake in Pacific City, Oregon. I was challenged by my friend who was in a 95 toyota with 33" swampers and 4.10 gears. He challenged me to climb the main bowl, something I never even tried with my cj7. So I floored it and flew right up in 4LO. Got some air at the top. Did about 4 more times with everyone standing around watching, while my friends Totota made it 3/4 of the way up 5 or 6 times. He was pi$$ed. Told him he either needed a V8 or a Dak. Either one would do. I have the 3.55 gears and love them. They are great with the 33" tires. You dont need 4.10's or 4.56's to wheel with 33" tires. The only reason you would need low gears like that are for rock climbing. Sand and snow are all about momentum and staying on top. Mud is the same. I have a ton of pics from both trips, but my scanner blew up, so I will have them sometime soon.

Corey, you are so right about the gears and sand. With that said, I still think that the 3.90's are the best. They are still high enough to do well on the highway but low enough for you to still pull a decent load with. They will also still give you enough spin to get the tires going in the sand and mud. I plan to go to 3.90's....one day......

I still like the extra oomph of a taller gear. I felt the difference in performance just increasing the tires by an inch. I like the way it screams with the 31" tires and 3.92 gears, but I still plan to go with at least 4.10s for when I can fit taller ones. Someday there might just be that big rock I gotta climb. hehehe

This is kind of dumb, but how does the ratio work on rear ends. I have a 00 4.7 auto w/3.55 . Are you 3.90's lower. How do you do the math? Thanks

Basically, your gear ratio determines how many times the driveline must rotate for the wheels (well, the ring gear to be exact) to rotate one full turn. So, with a 3.55:1 ratio, the engine must turn the driveline 3.55 times for the wheels to make a full turn. With a 3.92:1 (lower ratio), the engine will have to turn the driveline 3.92 times. More RPM's equal more power and torque, so the lower the gear ratio, the better off you are when power and torque is required -- especially at slower off-road speeds. However, gas mileage will suffer at highway speeds.
Did I answer your question? What sort of math are you after, calculating ratios?

Also, the lower the number, the higher the gear is, the higher the number the lower the gear is.
In other words, a 3.90 is lower than a 3.55.
Admit it Blizz, you just want to be able to smoke some 35's off the line dont ya!! ;-)
