Subject: TORSION BAR CRANK-UP ? IP: Logged
Message: I LOOK AT MY 2000 CC 4X4 AND SEE WHAT YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT (FRONT END LOWER THAN REAR).
IS CRANKING THE TORSION A DIFFICULT ADJUSTMENT? OR IS IT BEST LEFT TO A PROFFESIONAL? BEST TO HAVE ALIGNMENT AFTER TORSION ADJUSTMENT? I ONLY NEED TO GO ABOUT AN INCH. THX.

Message: You can crank them yourself. My method is as follows, some might do it a little different: Measure the distance from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the fender Jack up the truck by the frame to take the load off of the bars to make it easier. Crank both sides like 3 full turns. lower the truck and measure the distance from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the fender. This will gice you an idea of the amount you will need to go. If 3 turns gives you 1/2" and you want another 1/2" then jack it back up and give it 3 more turns. You may have to crank one side more than the other so its level side to side.
Another way that saves your from jacking the truck up and down...up and down, is to jack it up and crank the hell out of them till you know you have too much then take the truck off the jacks and unload the bars until the proper height.
I would go an inch at most. Make sure you get an alignment right away to keep from chewing up the tires. It's also not a bad idea to get it realigned about 6 months later in case the bars settle some.
Whew......

Message: A funny and strange thing, went to get my truck aligned tonight after obtaining about 2" of lift in front end from cranking torsion bars most of the way. I was expecting the camber to be way off... It was dead-on. Aside from having to adjust my Toe a little, everything was as straight as could be. The tech even brought me out into the shop so I could see for myself on the computerized alignment machine that the numbers were at 0 degrees! The service manager at Pepboys was cool and didn't charge me for the tech to adjust my Toe to spec since I had just bought tires there a few weeks before. I guess the reason I brought this up is because, anyone who cranks tbars up and gets an alignment should ask to see the computerized print-out of before vs after settings or see the computer screen with your own eyes@@! You could save some $$, they might only charge you a flat fee if no adjustment was needed instead of the full alignment price. I am thinking that my Dak isn't special in this and adjusting tbars up if truck was fairly level from factory may NOT alter camber as expected. My truck had the factory front-end droop and I leveled it about a month ago, then added the 1.5" lift block this weekend to rear so I leveled it again. Thought this might be useful info for some!!

Message: I put 32's on my 2002 Dakota and cranked up the torsion bars. I also trimmed the plastic on the inner fender wells a little.
My tires don't rub but I can't get my alignment strait. The truck drifts to the right a little.
As soon as a good lift is available I will buy it and install it.
To adjust the torsion bars there is an adjuster that is positioned under the truck on each side mounted to the frame on the outside under where the front seats are mounted. To adjust them just tighten them. You must be very careful to put the same amount of turns on each side. You should also take note of the position of the upper A arm to the bump stop. If you crank them up too much you will put the upper A arm in contact with the bump stop and the suspension will not be able to flex upward at all.
I hope this helps. If you have questions feel free to e-mail me.
