anyone had trouble getting the shifter into second gear after installing the 3" body lift? What did you do to fix this?

I had problems with my 5spd. in 2nd and 4th gear. I ended up bending the shift rod with a torch to get it to work. Some people say you can also weld a 3" extender to raise the "S" curve back to stock height. It's kind of a pain if you don't have the right tools, but it works out in the end.

I was going to do what you described, but I thought I should check where to make the bend. Toward the bottom of the shifter, there is a large bulge which seems to be filled with rubber. Heating this part of the shifer made me nervous so I decided to hold off... Where did you make the bend? Above the bulge where the shifter starts to taper?

Before you heat anything up, you need to remove the shifter from the tranny and strip ALL the plastic stuff off and unscrew the upper half (the knob). This way you won't melt anything important. I have some pictures of the final look if you want an idea of how mine looks now. I basically made the "S" bend into an "I" but it still has some curve to it. Hope that makes sense.

Check out my pics on my site, it might help a little:

i just put a 3in. body lift on my 99 dak a few weeks ago. its a 5-speed. bent the shifter according to the directions from performance acc. the shifter hit the dash in 1st and 3rd gear. bent it back to the original position and everything worked fine. do not bend the shifter.

Yeah, I've heard different stories. Some work without modifications and some don't. Mine was really bad to the point where I could shift into 2nd or 4th at all! So I guess for those who don't need to bend... be glad!! hehe... ;-)

yeah well mine isn't that bad and that's why I never did it at first... it goes into 4th w/ no problem. 2nd is a bit tricky, but it does go in and it doesn't pop out. I just know it's supposed to be a lot easier to get into second gear and that's why I was going to make the bend. I don't really want to pull the shifter off the top of the tranny... I was thinking about bending the black part of the shifter (the black main straight part that screws onto the "s-curve"), not the small "s curved" piece. if you've got pics, I'd love to see them. send me some email. thanks!

I thought you can get a shifter extention with the body lift. I had one with my ranger so it brought it back to where it was in stock form. I want to do a body lift soon on my dak and i have the 5-spd.

performance acessories doesn't give you one... it's not really a matter of making it longer, it's about needing a little differently shaped piece, so they just say to bend it.
