The other day i put my truck in 4w h, and 4w l, and it did fine. Yesterday, and today, I go to put it in four wheel drive, and it doesnt wont to work at all. I shift it to 4wh h, and 4wh l, it goes, and i can hear the transfer case "whine" but I gas it to go, and my back wheels just spin. (its in snow). It seems the front wheels are getting no power at all.
What can I do, or can I get someone to do to fix it??
Thank Ya for any help

The first thing I would do is have someone watch the front driveshaft while the rear wheels are spinning (from a safe vantage point). If it is not turning the problem is in the transfer case. It looks like you have an '87 Dakota. Does the '87 have a front disconnect on the axle? If you find the front driveshaft spins with the rear wheels the problem could be with the front axle disconnect, if it has one. Jeeps had a vacuum actuated disconnect on the front axle back then, that's why I mentioned it.

This is a common problem with early Dakota’s with the vacuum actuated CAD system on the front differential. It normally comes up on the lists this time of year. Click on the image of my Dakota below and read the section “4x4 Won't Engage“

I have a Ram 1500 but the disconnect is the same idea. One time the 4x4 stopped working and the light never came on. We found that the vacuum line had been burned through that went to the T-case, so the actuator could not move. The second time was much more involved, as the light still came on meaning that the canister was moving. This time it was my spider gears in the front diff that exploded because Dodge had a 'better idea' and did not want to have manual locking hubs. A lot of good that did me in 2 feet of snow with an exploded front diff!
