Subject: Torsion Bars IP: Logged
Message: Yeah Yeah, I know check the archives. Trust me I have because I'm on here every frickin day (I'm addicted)Different question.
What are ya'll torsion bars set from the factory.
Here's the deal, When I look at my truck the passenger side is 1/2" lower than the drivers side and the drivers side is 1/2" lower than the rear. I don't think they were set right at the factory or have settled.
Here's the real test, from the wheel to the frame my lower a-arms are at an angle. The frame side is lower! The wheel side of the a-arm is higher (about 3/4" on the passenger side) From my experience all of the trucks I've seen (chebys, fords, and yotas) the a-arms are swung down so that the frame mount is higher. Is this a dakota thing or do I need to adjust my torsion bars.

Message: It varies from the factory, although there's usually 1-2" of adjustment if you want to raise or level the front end. After 20K miles, I finally decided to check mine. Parked the truck on a level surface, took measurements from frame to ground and discovered the driver's side was infact 1/4 - 1/2" lower than the passenger side (Verified this with dimensions from rocker panels to ground and top of wheel wells to ground). I adjusted the torsion bars, which leveled the truck left to right and front to back.
After a wheel alignment and a week of driving, I rechecked all the measurments, and everything still sat level (Maybe when you buy a new Dak, the dealer should tell you to check these things when you get home -- hehe). And, the A-arms (at the wheels) should sit level or slightly lower than the frame. Have you taken a look at the torsion bar adjustment bolts to see how much room you have to raise the front end?

Message: I haven't checked how much adjustment I have on the bolt. I found it quite strange thet my a-arms were angled upwards from the frame when all the other trucks (chevy fords, yotas) are angled down to give the differential better clearance.
Any of you other guys looked under your trucks to see which way the a-arms are angled?

Message: they're def. supposed to be angled down from the frame. Mine are and they were right from the factory. I wouldn't crank them too high though... they're not supposed to be 45 degrees or anything.. I'd estimate they're about 10 degrees.

Message: I adjusted up my torsion bars to level my Dak out and the a-arms are now just below the frame. Looks much better, alignment was a must since I had to go up so much. I passed an 01 or 02 RC 4x4 Dak yesterday morning and the torsion bars must have been all the way down and sitting on the snubbers, looked like a hot rod with its ass end up in the air. Camber was way off, the front tires were tipped in towards the truck so bad that it must have rode and handled like crap. The salesman or service manager that checked off OK for suspension set-up on delivery checklist should be shot. I wanted to pull the guy over and point it out to him, but he has gotta know, it was just to obvious to go unnoticed.
