Even though my thumbnail and profile pic have not been updated yet (can't find that 4 digit number!), my Dakota has a more agressive look to it. I posted a few pics on my yahoo photo album...one from when it was brand new and four taken today.

Hawkeye: even though I'm not lifted (yet), can I at least join the black wheel gang? Oh and yes, that is bedliner material...I was going for the road warrior look.

Holy &*^%! that is bedliner material! It actually does not look all too bad, but hows it look up close? Should keep the rockers from getting chipped any more:) Doesn't even look like the same truck, at first I thought it was one of those STX's with the graphite colored bumpers and fender flares.

How much $$$ did that cost (the rocker panels, flares and valence)???

It looks sweet. That stuff is great if your on the trails a lot. I've seen jeeps covered top to bottm with it. If it's from a good dealer like a Rhino Liner then it has a lifetime warranty. Let the trail running begin!!!

Did they only offer black or is that what you wanted. I've seen a couple who color match.

Great truck

Apparently my thumbnail upload is retroactive since the new thumbnail is up on my previous post. Anyway...

I know the look isn't for everyone, but it's what I wanted. I knew that I wanted to get rid of the two-tone look and switch to black wheels (AR-767's, by the way), but didn't want to drop big money for a new paint job. They idea for doing this hit me Last Friday night, but I wasn't sure I wanted to go through with it. Then I saw a rhino lining ad that had a red Ford Ranger with the liner applied down low. That sold me on the idea. It looks better in person than in the pictures, but I think it will look better once the black stuff starts to weather and fade a bit...it's a little too shiny right now. So contrary to what most people want, I really hope the color fades!

I actually did all the work myself, using herculiner. I took a lot of time (5 hours!) for prep work, most of which was spent sanding and VERY carefully taping everything off. I have no idea how much a professional would charge, but I'd have to guess considerably more than a standard bedliner job because the prep work was so time consuming. I was a little concerned about doing everything myself because if I screwed something up I'd have nobody to blame, but it turned out pretty good. And if some of it chips off...big deal. I've still got another quart of the stuff and plenty of rollers. I'm planning on touch-ups from time to time.

As the ad says, "Dodge. Different."

Now that I finally got my rig, the black rims look really appealing......also, the grill job that Blizzard did(SS Grill??)...I wonder how that would look in black? Hmmm....

It came out pretty thick...I have no idea how thick in terms of whether it's an 1/8 or 1/16 or whatnot. I did the recommended two coats using a large cell foam roller for good texture. The more I look at it the more that I like it, and I'm getting a lot of positive comments from people I work with. As far as durability, only time will tell. But as I said before I've got extra liner and rollers if I have to do touch ups.

Now all you need Dan is a set of Goodyear Hummer tires, one of those huge steel bumpers and a safari rack and the Dak will be ready to see action in Afghanistan. :)

I think Dan's right. Depending on where you go, to get that done professionally would be spendy. I took my truck down to Line-x and asked what it would cost me to get the front valance and the rear bumper inserts done. (I hate the gray) If I took them off myself, it would cost me $175. More if they did the removal. I can't imagine what they would charge for the rest.

Dan: Your truck looks Incredible. The weathering will help, too. I would love to do that to my truck...but I would want to keep my chrome, that may look funny...and I don't know that the color of my truck would be as compatible as yours. It's an inspiration to see. I just might do the valance and inserts myself! I really despise the gray!! I've stayed away from having them painted, because I just don't want to have to worry about chipping.

When I saw the pics of his lifted QC I knew I had to do something with mine and I knew I wanted the same black wheels...something about the black wheels and green paint just looks mean! Seeing his truck in person a couple of weekends ago got me thinking even harder about what I could do. Maybe he should start a truck design school or something.

I pulled the fender flares off, sanded the paint off leaving a rough surface texture, then did two coats with the roller. The flares are attached with screws that have an allen head (don't remember what size) and really sticky double-sided tape. But Dodge also uses one plastic pop-in rivet on each flare, which I had to break. I still need to remove the flares again and put some different tape in there, and I'll replace the plastic rivet with a screw. FYI: after pulling the flares off I found a lot of dirt underneath the flare...if I lived in an area that salted the roads I'd be very concerned about rust underneath the flares.

I'll try to get a couple of pics to you this evening of the fender flares.

It wipes off easily right after you put it on. The longer you leave it on, the harder it is to get off. And once it has completely dried, forget about getting it off. If you're going to do the flares I'd highly encourage you to take them off. Then you don't have to worry about accidentally removing paint from the body when you're sanding, and you don't have to worry about getting any of the liner material on the paint. I did my flares last, so I wound up leaving them off overnight so they were completely dry before putting them on.

I'll take the pictures of the flares before it gets dark, then I'll post some tips on surface prep and application. That post should be up sometime this evening.

Knobbyman,

I put 3 more pics in my photo briefcase at

http://photos.yahoo.com/dangruber

The photos are of the LR fender, RF fender, and the RR part of the bumper.

Tips:
1. Pull the flares before prepping and coating them. The extra few minutes spent pulling them off and re-installing them later will be more than made up for because no taping will be required and you won't have to be nearly as careful when sanding.
2. Sanding: I used 120 grit just to make sure I got a good surface for the herculiner to grab onto. I then went over it all again with the scuff pad provided in the kit. I probably took off more paint than I needed to, but I just wanted to make sure that the stuff stuck, so I went down to primer, with bare metal showing in a few spots. I didn't tape off before I sanded, but I was EXTREMELY careful when sanding to make sure I didn't go too far. Also, make sure you use a good wax remover (xylene) before sanding so you're not just grinding wax deep into the paint.
3. Application: do two coats, and make sure you have 2-3 complete, identical rollers available. The instructions said that you could clean the roller between coats, but I couldn't get the roller off after the first coat, and the handle was sticking really bad to the gloves anyway. BUY MORE LATEX GLOVES THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED! I used about 6 complete pairs that day, changing them every time I stopped applying the stuff. That will also minimize accidental damage to anything you happen to touch when working with the herculiner. Also, I'd stick with something other than a regular paint roller. I used large cell foam rollers and got good texture. A regular paint roller would probably leave fuzzy stuff on the surface.
4. Miscellaneous: I used low adhesion painters tape (the blue stuff) because it lifts up easier when you're done. I called the herculiner tech line and asked them if I should use a wire tape (they said I could but it wasn't necessary), and how long to wait before pulling up the tape (they said 20 minutes after the 2nd coat)...as long as the stuff is still tacky the tape will come up and make a clean cut line.

It's easy to do. Just give yourself plenty of time and prep carefully, and you should get good results.

WOW instructions all here VERY NICE!! Wal-mart sells this stuff don't they? or ... I think I heard somewhere that Sams does is that correct? So... basically this is like painting w/ rollers but using sticky paint and you have to sand first.
If I can get everything together I'm going to have to do it this weekend.... I think *need to check my bank first :-)* Just the flairs lower part of the front bumper & my new rear bumper.

How long did it take you... From start to finish... including the dry time... If you have a rough guess that'll work.

OK, I have been on every website and called their sales/tech lines trying to find me a wheel/tire package with 305/70-16's ProComp XT's and Black Rock Crawlers and here is what I have found. They do not make The rockcrawlers in any size or color for my Dak and American Racing 767's are on back order? What's a lifted Dak Owner to do? I really do not want to spend $100+ per aluminum aftermarket wheel right now but instead want to join the Black Wheel Gang for less and maybe upgrade to aluminum's later if they don't look good with my Bright Silver Paint. Anyone have any suggestions to my dilemma, I really do not want to buy wheels from one place and tires from another as the price goes up considerably when you add in seperate shipping/handling, Mounting/Balancing and Centers/Lugs that are all included when you get a package deal. I am desperate to get these stock wheels/tires off since I installed body lift. As always, Thanks!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I got the wheels and the herculiner at pep boys. The wheels were about $42 each plus $9 (!) for the center caps...I ordered them on a Sunday and had them in my hands on the following Thursday. Got all the sandpaper, rollers, tape, gloves, etc at home depot.

It took me about 10 hours start to finish, but I also had to spend a lot of time prepping the bumpers, grill, and lower body, and that includes letting it get dry enough to drive since I didn't do this at home. If I had just done the flares and lower bumpers I'd say roughly 5-6 hours, including letting it get dry enough to take on the road, maybe 3-4 without the dry time.

If you want to play with how it will look, just manipulate a photo of your truck on the computer. I played around with adobe photoshop for quite a while before I decided on the look that I wanted.

Also, Pepboys has some good deals and I myself have bought alot of "stuff" there when I did not want to wait a week for it to come in the mail, so had I checked with them last week and they do not sell ProComp tires and do not stock the wheel for my truck. With the national backorder on 767's(salesman said was due to new truck owners taking off their expensive aluminum wheels to put on snow tires with "cheap" wheels), they said it could be 3-4 months before they will be available again which means springtime. If I have to, I'll just bye a damn white wagon wheel(same rim only white) and paint it black!

I am startin to think that Hawkeye is the cause of this National Backorder on 767-'s...:) You have stocks in American Racing Hawk?
