Subject: 4x4 of the Year? The Ram IP: Logged
Message: Well Four Wheeler magazine has disappointed me again, but at least I'll give them credit for selecting the Ram. I just got my issue today and it went up against the TuRD's, Nissan Super/Crap, and a few others. Needless to say...the Dakota was missing from the article. I thought the Dak would be a better match up against the smaller-size trucks than a full-size Ram, but maybe the Ram is more popular than the Dak???
Anyways...

Message: The new Ram 4x4 has independent front suspension. Eeewwww. Now the only truck you can get with a solid axle up front is that Ford superduty. Damn.

Message: What is the freakin deal with everyone hating IFS. It is a superior suspension!
The arguments for a solid axle are not as valid nowadays. You can beef up an IFS also!
The whole solid axle preference seems to stem from old backyard mechanics that can't change with the times. They want there old simple front-ends that they know how to work on.

Message: The 2500 & 3500 series for 2003 are supposed to keep the solid font axle. Haven't heard anything differnt lately though.

Message: You can beef up IFS but they are much more expensive to lift, repair, etc. IFS also has much less articulation off road. It does give a better ride on road though. IFS is out on trucks for one reason alone. To give the truck a more car like ride. Too amny people want a truck but dont want it to ride or handle like a truck. That has been the consensus over the past 10 years. Off road race trucks have IFS yes, but, they are VERY EXPENSIVE setups. They are designed for the handling characteristics. They are long travel but there is a big difference between having a lot of travel and a lot of articulation. Bottom line is, for going fast off road and on road - IFS. For slow crawling around offroad in the really hairy stuff, not just in the rocks either, in the woods, swamp, etc. as well, - solid axle.

Message: Correctumundo Hawkeye. Well said. Both front suspensions have their place in the offroad world. Just depends on what you are doing. Dont forget to mention that straight axles endure more pain and abuse than stock IFS systems. Offroad IFS systems are $20,000+. And since the biggest market share of truck buyers rarely even see a dirt road and they demand a comfortable ride, manufacturers must go with the IFS. If somebody enjoys rockcrawling and the real slow stuff, then the straight axle is their choice.
Andrew it just depends on what you plan on doing...there is no such thing as the "superior" offroad suspensions for "serious offroaders" anymore that I always read in the off road magazines. Both have their place.

Message: HUH?!?!
Just kidding
IFS----smoother on road, good off road, $$$ repair bills (more to break)
race IFS---- Way Too much $$$ for the avg person
Solid---Cheap, strong, best for most frequent off roaders.
