Rancho RS 5000!
Reasonably priced and nice firm yet plush ride on and off road, I have them on mine and I love them to death.

Message: I agree with Josh 100%. I have a 4x4 Dakota and have had RS 5000s on mine for about 25000 miles. I don't do a whole lot of offroading, but I do my fair share. Not only do they perform well but they look great under your truck!

Message: Go all out and get the RS 9000s. They are adjustable for on road and off road. I put them on my 4x4 Dak about 2 months ago. They kick ass off road, and you don't sacrifice the on road ride. That is my recommendation.

Message: I used Trailmaster SSV shocks on a '00 Jeep Wrangler, and within one week of trail leading duties at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, all four shocks were puking oil and needed replaced. Mepco Jeep in Salt Lake City gave me my money back on them, no questions asked. I had thought they were valved too softly for my preference even before they started leaking.
Rancho 9000 shocks have been a hit and miss kind of deal for me. I had one vehicle that I thought they were fantastic on. Two vehicles that I thought they felt harsh on, no matter what setting they were on. Each setting had different damping, with 5 being much firmer than 1, of course, but none of the settings were very good. Three of the four vehicles that I have put RS 9000s on have had excess suspension noise directly from the shocks. I just put RS 9000 shocks on my '02 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins diesel two weekends ago, and I am not that impressed with the ride, and once again, they are noisy, with a definite clunking, or thumping sound due to the shocks. The stock shocks were better than the RS 9000s. I am done buying RS 9000s, being as there are far better choices available.
Now if you want some better quality, nice riding shocks for a reasonable price, then check out Doestch Tech shocks.
If you want truly great riding shocks then buy Bilstein shocks.

I have 8 rs9000 with the controls in the cab, I have a little over 30,000 miles with them and they still ride like the day I installed them.
if you are looking for the flexabilty of both a soft and firm shock all in one this is way to go!!

Message: I have seen rwo Daks try the RS5000 and they did not last very long, I went with the RS9000s and the incab adjustment option. I love them. We have about 40,000 on them.
A stock Dakota is great place to start

Message: Gentle People, I must add my 2 cents worth.
When my OEM shock died, I replace them with Rancho RS5000. These shocks where shot in less then 4 months. I has very disappointed, I had heard good things about Rancho.
I replaced them with Monroe Reflex and have not looked back. The Reflex are gas charged as opposed to the Rancho gas cell shocks.
The Rancho amplified the dreded corregated concrete problem and turned me sideways at posted highway speeds.
The Monroe Reflex have eliminated the problem and returned the great handling I had with this truck (2001 QuadCab 4X4).
I split my driving at about 60% onroad and 40% offroad. With the Reflex I can drive my baby grandchildren and let them sleep, then hit the trails and be comfortable.
