It should be explained in your owners manual.

I drove a wrecker for 13 years prior to getting into the I.T. business. You don’t flat tow an AWD with the transfer case in Neutral for long distances. You’ll burn up the bearings in the transfer case. You will have to trailer it or tow it on a dolly with the rear drive shaft pulled and if you pull the shaft, remember to cap the back of the transfer case to prevent the lube from leaking out.
When I towed for a living, my personal preference was to lift the drive wheels off the ground. Front wheel drives get towed from the front, rear wheel drives from the rear and 4-wheel drives on a flat bed. However, this was not always possible. One common misconception is a part time 4x4 should be towed with the transfer case in neutral. Most part time 4x4s have neutral between 4Hi and 4Lo. When you shift into neutral, all you are effectively doing in disengaging the gear between the transmission and the transfer case. The transfer case is still geared to both the front and rear axles. If you lift the front with a sling and pull it forward, the front wheels will spin in the air. I have towed vehicles this way short distances at slow speed. You can flat tow part time 4 wheel drives as long as the transfer case is in 2Hi with the Transmission in Neutral. Even then, you’ll want to keep the speed no higher than 60. Normally with the transfer case in 2Hi I would grab them from the rear and tow them backwards.
On another Note: I have seen some CV axles that can be engaged and disengaged by some sort of twist lock mechanism on the CV axle itself. It was something from the RV industry to allow people to flat tow their front wheel drive cars behind the camper. I would assume a decent RV dealer would be able to steer you in the right direction if they are available for your truck.

I think the Dakota full-time system might be the exception to the rule. The owners manual for mine specifically mentions "recreational towing [behind a motorhome, etc.]" in neutral.

Yes you can tow the AWD Dakota behind a recreational vehicle without putting it on a flat bed. Here is the Procedure:

1. Bring vehicle to a complete stop.

2. Shut engine OFF.

3. Place ignition key in the ON position.

4. Depress brake pedal.

5.Shift automatic transmission to Neutral(N) or depress clutch on manual transmission.

6. Using the point of a ball point pen or similar object, depress the recessed transfer case Neutral(N) button for 4 seconds. The transfer case (N) light should now be ON and steady red.

7. start engine.

8. Shift automatic tranmission into Reverse(R).

9. Release brake pedal for five seconds and ensure no vehicle movement.

10. Repeat steps 9 and 10 with the tranmission in Drive(D).

11. Shut engine OFF and place ignition key to the unlocked off position.

12. Shift automatic transmission into park(P).

13. Attach vehicle to tow vehicle with tow bar.

14. Shift automatic transmission into Neutral(N) before towing is to begin.

CAUTION!!!!!!!
Damage to the transmission may occur if the transmission is shifted into Park(P) with the tranfer case in Neutral(N). and the engine RUNNING. With the transfer case in Neutral(N) ensure that the engine is OFF prior to shifting the transmission into Park(P).

CAUTION!!!!!!!!
Internal damage to the transfer case will occur if a front or rear wheel lift is used when recreational towing.

Hope this helps. I verified this procedure with my DAK and it works fine. You can find it on page 182 of the owners manual.

After reading my own post I realized I made a mistake. Line 10 should state:
repeat steps 8 and 9 with the transmission in Drive(D).
Again I found this info on page 182 of the owners manual in the Recretional towing section.
