Sounds like you have part-time 4wd, your not on dry pavement are you? if so that's not to smart. Part-time 4wd is only supposed to be used when the conditions are slippery, to allow the front tires slip,

I have had this truck for 8 years and I've never
heard this sound when put into 4wd. It's a 93
model with a 3.9 club cab. Someone told me that
it maight be the ax

It is more then likely one of the half shafts. When they go bad they pop like that.
