Message: I plan on stepping up my tire size from 27" to 31" and i've been told that whenever you step up the tire size you must change youre stock gears if you want any kind of performancs or fuel mileage on or off road. i'm running the stock 3.55 now.

Message: After the tire change you stock gear ratio would be about 3.40 that off the top of my head dont think it would hurt to much on the performance it will cost you about two mpg. You can go to the dealer and have them reset you pcm for the bigger tire. the lowest rotational speed for the speed sensor is 648 rpms that will put your speedo 3 mph slow. so you will be going faster than what you speedo reads.

Message: 3.55's with 31's should be fine, especially with a V8. If you have a V6, 3.92's might be in order, but I don't think I would spend that kind of money for that small of a change, personally.

Message: Changing the front and rear gears is going to cost some bucks. I had the 31's and 3.55 gears in my 2000 and with that multi-speed automatic it was very downshift prone on even the slightest grades which is hard on mileage. I feel 3.92's would be better for that tire and tranny combo. A LT 235/75/15 or 30 X 9.5 X 15 would be a little more sensible with the 3.55's in my opinion.

Message: I'm running 33in. Yokohama Geolander AT+II with the stock rearend. 3.55's baby..I think it's like 3.23 in the rear at the end.. gas sucks that's for sure but I need some 4.11 or 4.10's I haven't broke anything or even changed the diff fluid yet.. It still looks good and has a decent viscosity feel yet. no shavings to be seen or indicated. But you know what they say, don't fix something unless it's broken. Run it till it get's close or brokes..
