Subject: do i need a hi-jack?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just started offroading and a freind of mine told me the first things i need to buy are recovery hooks(why dodge didn't install them from the factory is a mystery to me), a tow strap, and a hi-lift jack. I would like to know what this is used for and if i really need one. what are some other necessary offroad tools i should have with me out on the trail. also, if i buy a winch(warn, superwinch) what would be the minimum weight capacity.

If I remember correctly its twicce the trucks max wieght so for the dakota an 8000 lb or better winch. The bigger the winch the deeper the poo poo it will pull you out of. As for the recovery tools with the winch I would get there acc. bag kit that comes with heavy leather work gloves a line wieght for the winch line etc.. A high lift jack is a good acc. to have but remember with a stock dak you have only one place to use it ( the center of the rear bumper. If you have a brush guard installed yu could modify that to use the high lift. A high lift can be used as a winch as well as a jack. Also if you in real deep and need to put something under the tires to help its imposible to use the stock jack. If this is any help this is what I'm doing, x9 winch with acc. bag and high lift jack plus an extra assortment of recovery straps and tree saver straps.

I'd toss on a 12K lbs hydrolic winch, like the Army uses on their hummers. And I would have to say that I agree with Matt, modify the darn thing to use the high lift.

Some of the mods I'm going to do is install a one piece brush guard and weld on afoot plate so the jack has a place to seat when jacking. If you dont want to do that you could install some tow hooks parallel with the ground. In the back I'm making a new bumper that will accept it, the bumper will also be an air tank. No ? is dumb accept the unask one. On the tow hooks, If you use them for a seat be careful high lift jacks tend to be unstable.

I disagree with nick one the hydralic winch for one reason only. If the truck dies and you cant or should not restart the engine you have no winch

That is the one problem with hydrolic. You would think they would make a hydrolic/eletric combo someday.

I just starting wheeling recently as well - and thought since my truck is stock height, my jack would work. My buddy explained it this way.....go on uneven terrian (holes and whatnot) and attempt to jack up your truck. The answer - I have a hi-jack now. I couldn't even get the jack to reach, let alone lift the truck high enough to remove a tire. I plan on doing some mods to assist in the use, but also bought the little attachment for curved bumpers.
