Okay i am sure someone has went over this but i have looked and have not been able to find it. I have a 2001 dodge dakota 4.7v8 and manual 5 speed. it has a 3 inch body lift and 33inch tires.I am tired of going through front axle housings. i have broke 3 of them. so now time for a swap. I bought a 1979 ford bronco for the parts. has the hp dana 44 and rear ford 9 inch. I have a question about the rear tone ring in the stock 9 1/4. What does that tone ring do? I have looked at a couple places some people say it controls the shifting on the automatic and with out it the engine does not run right. some say it controls the abs. and some say it controls the speedo. can some one that knows or has done a swap on a axle without it let me know what has happended. Dont care about the abs so I am hoping thats all it does. but i need my speedo!!!

the rear diff doesnt have anything that controls your abs or speedometer. your speedometer is ran by gearing in the transmission and a proportioning valve would control rear abs. My educated guess is that the ring might help control clearance or backlash, hope that helps.

maybe i did not explain it well enough. the tone gear i am talking about is bolted next to the ring gear and the there is a electrical sensor that is bolted in the top of my diff and goes into the diff housing and reads off the tone gear.

What you are discribing sounds like what the ABS sensor picks it's signal up from to let it know the rear wheels have stopped turning while your rig is still in motion. That is how the ABS gets activated and releases enough braking pressure to allow the wheels to turn...reducing your chances of the rear tires braking loose (skidding). That skidding of the rear usually ends up with the rear of the vehicle passing the front. That is the whole reason this safety feature is now standard on most (all?) new vehicles today. Was it standard equipment in `01, or an option? On my `95 it was an option. If it was standard equipment (or mandated by 2001) my only concern would be in your particular state would you be liable if this safety feature was removed? Just something to look into.

Your speedo will stop working and your tranny will not shift. Best way to test is just unplug it and try. Has nothing at all to do with backlash.
You can get the same signal off an auto tranny and use it to control shifts/speedo. Search on some other sites there is way more info and quite a few people who have done the swap.
