I have a 98 Dakota with the 5.5" TC lift on the rear. To get rid of the blocks and get more travel, will the same generation Durango spring under leafs bolt up to my Dakota?

Have you done this swap? Did you need different shackles? Was the ride height level with the front? Do you know what the overall suspension travel is after the swap?

Is there a benefit? Are the springs rated for more weight? I have an 04 4x and would be interested as well.

Durango rear springs are stronger than Dakota rear springs. Durango torsion bars are stronger than Dakota bars.

Marco you are wrong. Front torsion bars are the same by engine size.

Rear leafs could be had in three different weight ranges..1250...1800...2250.

If you want to get rid of your blocks have your current leafs re-arched to what you need.

Not so fast there.
I have 2000 Durango bars in my 2004 Dakota. The Durango bars are thicker and much stronger than the Dakota bars they replaced. 2000 Durango only had one size torsion bar.

Howard - Why not take your own advice ? Thickness has everything to do with spring rate in a torsion bar set up. It is a simple physics principle. The thicker the bar, the greater its resistance to torsional twisting. Mopar has been using that suspension for many years. The old heavy big blocks came with some of the biggest torsion bars to support their weight. Drag racers would replace them with the skinnier bars because this resistance works in both directions - allowing the front suspension to rise easier on the launch; transfering more weight to the rear for traction. This generality about torsion bars is true as long as the same alloy is used.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Wow the idiot kowaski is here now! If you have a 1" thick hollow bar is it the same a 1" solid bar. You are a fing retard. Material used also has a great say in it. So go f yourself.

It is the same in diameter, but not in torsional strength. A hollow bar will eventually collapse with torsional deflection applied to it...no matter what the material. A hollow bar is not typically designed for torsional deflection. Just sayin'...

But enough about that...does anybody know the weight rating(s) for Durango rear leaf springs? More importantly has anyone actually installed a set on their Dakota?

Hollow sway bars are used every day. To my knowledge Chrysler never used them for torsion bars, but that said material differences can change the rating of the said bar. You could have two bars of the same diameter made with different materials and they would have different torsion ratings.

Chrysler did use hollow sway bars in the Dodge Durango through model year 2003.

kowalsji, usually i agree with you, but spring rate differs not only with size but also material
