Subject: Flip kit for 2WD IP: Logged
Message: To lift the rear of a 2wd is it just shackles or is they a flip kit with different perches? It looks like I could just flip the leafs on top of the axle but Im not sure what kind of geometry problems it would cause.. Any help would be appreciated!

Just flip the axle, then the spring perches would be on top.

Message: Won't work that way. Truck would go backwards in D and forwards in R.
Nice try, though.

Message: The perches would need to be welded to the top of the axle. Whether they be the originals cut off the bottom or a new set, the originals must be removed. They will be in the way of the U bolts when you try and re-assemble it. The front of the diff will need to be rotated up a few degrees since it would now be under the springs. Think of it this way...the diff stays in the same spot. You are technically raising the truck.
As far as flipping the axle: the gears inside are cut to turn in a primary (forward) direction. Look at a picture of a 3rd member and you will notice they actually have a curve in the gears. This provides strength in the primary, or typically loaded, direction. If you simply flipped it, they would be operating in a 'reverse' (weaker) direction...not reverse in D or forwards in R.

Message: Jason's right, Other Bill.
The truck would go backwards in D and forwards in R if you just flipped the axle to put the existing spring perches on top. It's counter-intuitive, but it's true.
Draw a circle on a piece of paper to represent the left wheel. Make an arrow to denote direction of rotation, and hold the paper in correct orientation. Now turn the paper as if the axle was flipped and the wheel was now on the right.
This is also why you have to rotate directional tires front-to-back and never side-to-side (unless you remount them).

Message: Manny, Jason B,
I stand corrected about reverse/ forward comment (did the finger in the air rotation as I mentally flipped the axle) :-)

Message: Never tried to order spring perches. Call your local dealer and ask for 'parts'.
As for the front, I believe companies like Daystar might sell a urathane spacer to install on top of the spring. If so, they will likely be 1 to 2 inches...no more.
Good luck
