Subject: Fuel Tank Skid Plate
IP: Logged

Message:
I just picked up a factory fuel tank skid plate, the metal one too. Can anyone tell me exactley how this mounts? Looks like it goes right over the existing straps, but does not replace them. Plus it bolts up in front of the tank with some nut plates. The location with the straps is my big question. Thanks!

On my 2001, the skid plate goes between the straps and tank.

On my 94 clubcab 4x4 with factory 22gal tank and skid plate the frame side of the skid plate bolts to the frame. The inside uses the same nuts as the straps. The skid plate is outside the straps and there is a bracket on the frame ahead of the tank for the two mounting bolts up front. You probably don't have that extra bracket if your truck didn't come with skid plates.

So on your 2001, the straps go inside the channels of the skid plate? That was my first thought since the mounts actually have channels that straps could be fed through. The service manual makes it sound like the skid goes over the straps, which is where the confusion started.

You are correct. The straps go through those slots, and hold up both the tank and the shield.

You might have to use differant straps. I don't know.
