Message: When pushed for power, many say the v6 isn't any better at mpg than the v8. It's a heavy truck for a v6,so if you're also considering bigger tires to go with the lift you are considering, that will dog it down further unless you also do a gear swap. That can be pricy for a 4x4. You could likely find a better deal on a v8 these days, and might be happier if it's decent power you want.

Message: My 2004 4.7L V8 Dakota gets better gas mileage than my 1996 2.4L I4 Nissan pickup. Both vehicles weigh over 4000 pounds.
Kowalski's right about V8 prices these days. You can find some smokin' hot deals if you look around a bit.

Message: Ive got both, and my work truck the 98 has a v-6,and with the added weight of tools and lumber i get 12mpg,and no power to speak of. my 94 desert truck has a v-8 and loaded down gets between 14 and 17 hwy mpg and has power-o-plenty. i would never buy another v-6.

Message: If i took the rack and all my stuff out of my v-6 and it was completely empty,i would get better mileage and have more power as well but i dont see a use for an empty truck,i might as well get a car,the V-8 is far the better way to go.
