Subject: U-joints IP: Logged
Message: I wondering what sort of offroad obstacles(hill climbing, deep mud holes, etc.) would put the most stress on u-joints? I am puting togeather some gear for offroading and someone told me to get some extra u-joints for front and rear so if they bust, I wont be stuck. I have never changed them before and was wondering if it is difficult and how time time consuming it is for a 93 4x4 auto with 318?

Message: Its good advice to take some replacement U Joints on the trail. I dont know how often or how easy they get busted, but if you lose one, and you can, you're stuck because your drivetrain will not be powering the tires, and your headed nowhere. I have seen U-Joints replaced on the trail, but I didnt see how it was done.
Definitely learn how to do it from somebody who knows, as it takes about 45 minutes to replace both. Most of the time it just reqires a hammer for removal and placement of the new U-Joint, and then tons of grease.
Sorry I cant explain HOW to replace them, but I can support the idea of how important they are on the trail, or wherever you will be.
