Message: How often is it really necessary to replace the fluids in our trucks?
I use my 4-wheel drive not that often and do not ford streams unless their going across the road.
The dealer says something like every 6000 miles, but this seems a little ridiculous. Isn't it a closed system? why would water get into it any way?

Message: Water gets into your diff like this:
There's a vent valve on the rear diff. It's a spring-loaded check valve, which means air can get out through the valve, but not back in. So picture a nice hot diff housing being immersed in water, such as when you "ford streams." Air inside the housing contracts due to cooling. Now there's a vacuum inside the housing, and the only way anything can get in to equalize the pressure (and it will) is through the pinion bearing seal or shaft seals. What gets in is the water. Now your diff oil is contaminated and subject to emulsification and foaming, which significantly reduces the oil's lubricating properties.
There you go.
