Subject: Peeling out at the grocery store IP: Logged
Message: So the other day I was pulling out into traffic on an incline and started peeling out. I wasn't trying to show off, I was just a little aggitatied. So because of the steep incline and my impatience I began to lose traction (tires are not bald.)
I think its time for a posi so this doesnt happen again. I have an 04 4x4 3.7, I'm not sure what axle is underneath and would like to find a wreaked dakota at the local pick-apart. Is it just a matter of pulling out the guts? and/or is their any info on the truck that will let me know that it has a posi before I start wrenching.
If anyone knows what all I need to look for any help would be greatly apprieciated. Let me know if I need to get under and look for any pertinate info

Message: Unfortunatly, not that simple. Since the Dodge does not use a removable carrier, you have to disassemble everything and take it away in paerts. That's not so tough. But then you have to assemble it correctly. That's where it gets tricky. If you don't have the tools and know how, there's a good chance you'll screw it up. Then you're worse off than you are now.
Dodge diffs are pretty famous for needing a rebuild at about the 60-80K mile mark. If you're in that area, you should consider a complete rebuild. Then you can have LSD added. Factory parts are guaranteed not to howl.
Another optionis an add on LSD, I think it's from Auburn. Supposedly something an average mechanic can install in their garage.

I have a good amount of tools, but have never worked any differentials. Is there any special tool I'd need to add to my tool box for this? I"m pretty good when it comes to this type of stuff; if you never try you'll never learn from it.
I'm at 62,000 so I will be keeping the rebuild in mind. Judging by what you said about the factory parts your suggesting that I use dodge parts, correct? I don't think your saying that I need to go for the dealer for this, just their parts, right?
On a similar topic I'd like to ask: I could do a search for it, but you seem very knowledgeable; is there a huge price difference between a posi and a locker (hydro or electric)?

Message: You need a couple of tools, most importantly a good dial indicater on a magnetic stand. Read the factory manual to make sure you do it right. If you're off by a couple of thousands, the gears will howl and wear out soon. I do a lot of my own work, but not that.

Yes, there is a big differance. Positraction is the name GM applies to their version of Limited Slip. It's just that, limited slip. Not no slip. It's very smooth, quiet, even, and works well. Assembled correctly, it will last a long time. One wheel on ice and you'll move slowly, as some of the torque will still be applied to the ice side.
A locker is just that, it physically locks. There are a couple of differant versions of this. The mechanical version have opposing plates with what looks like large teeth and grooves. Torque forces the plates together, and they lock. It can be noisy, and slightly harsh. When they lock and unlock in a corner, it can unsettle the car. But it's extremly strong, and can withstand some really high torque and shock loads. With one wheel in the air, the truck will still move foreward.

Message: Randy's ring and pinion can supply you with whatever you may need, from all stock, to a full locker. I think they even have dvd's that show you how to do the job, and the tools you will need.

Message: The older dodge trannies were famous for needing a rebuild at 60K miles NOT the differentials. Both the 9 1/4 and 8 1/4 are stout diff's.

Message: .boB is correct, both the 8 1/4 and the 9 1/4 diffs are notorious for having the carrier bearings go bad around 80,000 - just ask the people who rebuild them for a living. The older trannies, like the 727, were known as some of the strongest. Maybe bob2 doesn't know about these older trannies ? Never had an older mopar tranny go bad, but I've been through several GM.
And calikota ? After a couple of us gave him further info about limited slip on another thread, realized he doesn't have it after all...
