can anybody explain to me the step by step procedure in replacing the vacuum switch on the transfer case installed on a 1988 dakota le,3.9ltr.engine 4wd. thank you.

Unscrew the old one and screw the new one in. It's a simple unit with a threaded end. Looks kind of like an oil pressure sending unit but has 4 vacuum hoses connected to it. The fitting with the hoses are keyed to only go on one way.

thanks walt for the info. can this unit be disassembled and be serviced or cleaned. mine seems to be sticking because when i shift back to 2wd it wont shift and the indicator lite stays on. in order for me to get it to shift back to 2wd,i tap the switch with a hard object and the lite will go out and sure enough it will be on 2wd.

No, it's a self contained unit. You just change the whole piece.
