We're fortunate to have the less problematical mechanical linkage; never had any problems engaging mine at speeds up to 55 or so.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

You can shift from 2wd to 4wd high at any speed you want providing the front tires are going the same speed as the back ones, you have to be completely stopped and the trans has to be in neutral to go from 4wd high to 4wd low. Don't even think about putting it into 4wd while you are spinning the rear tires, you will not like the possible outcomes. I went muddin with a guy one time in a 98 ext cab 318 Dak that had no idea what he was doing and got himself stuck, when he stopped moving forwards instead of hitting the brakes and stopping the rear tires he just yanked the shifter back without even lifting off the gas. His transfer case grenaded into 4 completely different pieces, and his front drive shaft got busted at the same time. I really wished I had a camera on me that day, it was cool looking!
