Subject: Ball Joint Issues IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I have had squeaky ball joints for about a year now.
How bad is this?
I know I probably shouldn't, but I spray them full of WD40.
Is this good, or bad?
Should I put heavy grease in them?
Should I just leave them alone, if I do that, they drive me crazy. People can hear me coming from a mile away!
What Should I do? I really don't want to replace them...
Any help would be great!

Message: True story. WD-40 is not a high pressure lube. WD-40 will wash and real lubricant (grease) out of the ball joint. This, as you've noticed, causes your ball joints to protest loudly.
As pwhiteelec05 said. get them replaced.

Message: Well the boots on the balljoints are gone. So there is no original grease there. They were gone when I bought it 2 years ago.
Where's the best place to get those online? Or is it better to get them at a automechanic?

Message: Deffinately get them replaced. When you do make sure to use Moog ball joints as they come with grease fittings which makes them last longer then stock. If you havn't done ball joints before you probably should take it to a shop and have them do it because when messing with the suspension not only could the spring seriously hurt you, you could also unintentionally cause another part to fail going down the road and cause an accident. To do balljoints you also need access to a balljoint press which isn't something everybody has in their closet. Like I said above make sure you request Moog balljoints even if you have to wait a few days to get them.

Message: How much would they normally run for?
Don't you have to replace the whole upper arm?

Message: I don't really know how much they run its been a while since I did mine on my 4x4 and my 2wd was covered by the warranty. On my 99 4x4 and my 02 2wd the upper ball joints rivet to the control arms you cut the rivets and install the new joints with bolts in their place, no need to replace the whole arm.

Message: How did you cut the rivets?
So you can just order the ball joint by itself w/o the control arm? And the Moog have a grease fitting?

Message: I have a air hammer with a rivet cutting chisel, but a grinder or cutoff wheel will work just as well. No you don't have to replace the control arm and yes the Moog ball joints (uppers and lowers) come with grease fittings, thats why they last longer then the stock ones.
