Subject: Front end noise IP: Logged
Message: Background:
2001 Quad-Cab 4X4 4.7L well maintained original owner.
Replaced Ball Joints with MOOG parts
Clunk in the front end.
Clunk is reduced with ball joints replaced, but still have a light clunk. Old were completely shot.
My thought either Cab mount or steering shaft.
Has anyone else noticed this problem. If so what was the cause and the fix.
Could control arm bushings wear cause this?
Thanks

Message: Jeff
Yes it happens when turning and on bumps (usually when turning on bumps) not going straight (forward or reverse) and not during braking in straight line.
I have a mechanical background and have worked on many vehicles in the past. I will check other components (i.e. tie rods rack and pinion mounting bolts etc).
Thanks for the reply.

Message: Had a "clunk" on my '95 4x4. Checked Everything mentioned here. Turned out to be a lower shock bolt was not "seated". It was tight, but not seated. Backed it out, hit it with WD40, ran it in and out a few times, then tightened it all the way. Hope yours is as easy. Good luck.

Message: The lf lower shock bolt wasn't tightened on my truck all the way either, but that was caused by who ever put the lift on the truck before I got the truck. They didn't clean out the loctite that was on the bolt from the factory, so the bolt would tighten up but as otherbill said it wouldn't go tight enough to hold the shock completely still. All I did was run a rethreader through the hole and wirebrushed the bolt off and havn't had a noise since.

Message: Replaced all four of them. Didn't want to chance it. Used MOOG and they have zerk fittings.
Still have to change the control arm bushings, I have poly replacements on hand.
