Subject: 2000 Dakota Solid Axle IP: Logged
Message: I finally got a ford 9" and d44 out of a 78 Bronco for my Dakota. Do you all know the difference in width for the year of those axles, I have not gotten to measure them yet. Also I am going to go with front coil springs vs. leafs, any recomendations there? Would I have to move the spring mounts on the axles closer in or out for the Dakotas frame? I was thinking of getting spring towers for a 78/79 bronco and bolting/welding them to the frame after I cut off all the independant stuff. I know there are a ton of post about this stuff, but they are old. Any new stuff out there? Thanks alot.

Message: IIRC, The Bronco frame is about 2" narrower than the Dakota frame (between the two front wheels). Also, the D44 is 2" wider wms to wms. We put a D44HD out of a 76 F250 under my buddy's 98 much in the same manor you described. We modified the spring towers and welded them to the frame. We didn't use the Ford radius arms as the 44HD came out of a leaf spring truck. Mike fabricated his own arms and mounts.
He had a pretty detailed thread about his swap over on Pirate4x4.Com under the name Mr. Mindless.
