Message: When I got the Durango bars from the donor vehicle, I also took the keys (because they were painted, unlike my rusted-from-the-factory Dakota keys), on the chance they were interchangeable. Turned out they were an exact match, even though the part numbers cast into them were different.

Your bump stops are at or near their limits.
Keep an eye on the CV-joint boots.

Facts:
It doesn't matter if you re-indexed (new keys) or not, you are still rotating the torsion bars and the upper bump-stop is the limiting factor in the equation.
double EE stated 7/14/07:
"I believe if you have the bars more than half way used on the adjust bolt, then they are pretty much stressed out anyway and if you have them fully cranked in my opinion they would definitely be way stressed out, your thoughts/opinions??"
Double EE,
When you posted the above comment, I thought you might understand how the torsion bar suspension works, but by your last post I'm not sure you are looking at the correct bump-stop...unless your rig was 'REALLY SAGGING' before. Either way, you have increased stress (according to your previous post) by rotating them up higher...with your new indexing keys. See, it doesn't matter...key or bolt, you still rotated the bars. Most dakotas (again, yours may have been lower) at the normal adusted height have a MAXIMUM adjustment of about 2"s upward. At that point the UPPER stops (on the frame underneath the aft portion of the upper control arm) are in contact with the upper control arm (if not mashed). When this is the case, you have little to no wheel droop at the front wheels...and that's ok if most of your driving is on the road. But take it off-road and you will be 'three-wheeling' most of the time as the lower of the two front wheels will most likely be air-born...(can be good for photos!)
Another thing to watch for is if the stops are mashed...they will eventually crack and break off from their mounting stud leaving metatl to metal contact.
The keys were a big seller for the GMs as they could not max out with the bolt. Not so much for dakotas, as most can.
I am not trying to bash, I just don't want bad gouge going out. Hope this helps everybody.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT THE NEW KEYS LOOK LIKE THAT I PAID A MACHINE SHOP ENGINEER TO MAKE UP SO I COULD COME UP WITH 2-3" OF LIFT WITHOUT CRANKING MY NEW TORSION BARS!?
I HAVE 4" OF ADJUSTMENT ON THE BOLT USED TO ADJUST TRUCK HEIGHT!
FACT ONLY 1 1/4" OF THAT BOLT IS USED UP LEAVING A LOT MORE ADJUSTING FOR FUTURE USE!
FACT 1" AWAY FROM BUMP STOPS!

HOW MANY OF THE TORSION BAR KEYS HAVE YOU HAD MADE UP AND ACTUALLY USED ON A DAKOTA?
THEY DON'T MAKE TORSION BAR KEYS OR A BUNCH OF OTHER UPGRADES FOR MY YEAR DAKOTA SO I HAD AN ENGINEER AT A METAL SHOP MAKE THEM UP WITH A GOAL OF 2-3" OF LIFT WITHOUT CRANKING THE NEW TORSION BARS !
SO FACT:UNLESS YOU HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN WHAT I HAVE HAD MADE UP YOU ARE ONLY GUESSING, I HAVE TESTED IT IN THE REAL WORLD TRIED AND TRUE!!

Message: Double EE,
Do you actually read the complete posts? Yours included? I would suggest, without being mad, you go back to your original post and read through these without being biased that everyone is against you. There are some good points in this thread…yours included! (there is not much in the aftermarket world for early Dakotas)
What year, V-8 or V-6, original or re-indexed key-way by “AN ENGINEER AT A METAL SHOP” …doesn’t matter. You are still raising the front end by rotating the torsion bars. And on these Dakotas the limiting factor when raising, are the upper bump-stops…unless you cut them off the frame. (not recommended) Your concern about stressing the torsion bars by adjusting the bolt is a valid one. Just know that the re-indexed key is now doing what you were trying to avoid happening with the bolt.
What you are going to do with the extra 1 ¾ of bolt is beyond me. Do the Math:
4” bolt – 1 ¼” used = 2 ¾” unused
2 ¾” unused – 1” to bump stop = 1 3/4'” extra
Are you getting the picture when it was mentioned the re-indexed keys were not so beneficial? That money could be better spent on HD U-joints, synthetic oils, aux lights, a good tow strap, etc.
I am the original owner of a ’95 ext cab that I do most all maintenance/ repair myself. I installed the suspension lift, body lift, fiberglass fenders, off-road lights, fabbed my own pre-run bar, relocated (higher) nerf bars, etc. While I don’t claim to be an expert, I do know my way around the Dakotas…so no, I’m not guessing. I’ve had all those pieces off in my own garage and know what they look like and what they do.
Don’t take this out of context like some earlier posts. It is your rig (and by your 1st post its a 1st or 2nd generation Dakota). Do to it what you want. I personally run 33x10.5s because I don’t want the extra 2”s of tire weight to try and stop or wear out the front end any sooner than it already will. Some will say that’s too tall while others say it’s too narrow. It’s mine and that is what I prefer. Some folks run the electric fans as apposed to cutting the fan shroud as I did when using a body lift. Enjoy your rig and continue to ask questions. Most of us here try to help. You are not always going to get the answer you want, but again, we are trying to help.
…and for the record, I have played that game, “You don’t know Jack…” It’s a lot of fun! Lighten up…

As others have pointed out, this is only a more expensive way of cranking or overcranking the torsion bars. If you have to do that to get the lift you want on a mopar, you're better off geting beefier bars, or finding another way. you could get beefier bars for about the price doubleEE wants for the keys. By the way, doubleEE, does your old lady have any personality, or do you only worship her rack ?
