Just thought I would let the '87-'93 Dakota owners know that the company 4X4Posi-Lok is coming out with a kit for the front CAD axle on our trucks. For those that may not know what this is, it is a kit that takes place of the vacuum actuated front axle disconnect. A cable is used to slide the shift fork that is controlled by the driver inside the cab. This company has been making these things for Jeep, GM, and Dodge Rams for years. I admit I am surprised they are building a kit for our trucks seeing they are not as popular as others. I have had to make alot of custom items for my truck and I was just about to modify one of these kits originally for a Jeep YJ. I have not had a failure from my vacuum actuated set up yet, but I have enjoyed being able to move heavier trailers with 2WD low. I will let you know when the product is available. Check out their product at www.4x4posi-lok.com

If you look back through the posts on this site over the years, you'll find the same info posted a few dozen times. If Posi-Lok had any intention of marketing a kit for the early Dakota, it would have been out years ago. They've had "Dodge Dakota Coming Soon" on the downloadable .PDF sales brochure on their website for years. However, I believe that kit was canceled due to lack of interest.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the CAD was eliminated on the Dakota in 91. Same year the Dakota was first offered with a factory installed V8, and the redesign of the front clip and the switch to 6-lug. That would make only the 87-90 to have a CAD. I don't believe Posi-Lok will invest the R&D $ to develop a kit that will only fit 4 model years that are not all that popular to the target customers. There is no return on investment to make it worth their effort.

Damn....And here I thought I stumbled across something new. Well I guess I will still have to make my own.
I've got a '92 with CAD and the one and only '93 that I've looked at still has CAD. From what I have read '94 was the first year they deleted CAD.

Yeah, I always assumed if you have the floor mounted transfer case shift lever, that is a good sign you don't have a vaccuum operated shifter for the transfer case.

Pretty much only vehicles with dash mounted switchs and such have the vaccuum operated shifter in the transfer case. Which I am pretty sure that the 1st and maybe second GEN Dakotas do not have.

I know my 1999 Dakota 4x4 has the floor mounted shifter and does not have the vaccuum operated selector.

my front axle has no disconnect, who cares about a posi lock i wouldn't mind a set of locking hubs, but that won't work to well on IFS now will it.

Toyota had manual hubs on their IFS trucks for a long time all the way up till the late 90s when they updated the body style a litle then they switched to CAD.

CAD is unreliable. there is a few ways that it can fail and when it does, and on my s-10 it did, its a pain in the azz especially when it happens on the trail, or when your stuck in a hole.
I would much rather have a rig without CAD.

The idea behind the posi-lok was that it will do away with the vacuum switch and the actuator. I don't recall anyone really having any trouble with the rest of the system(shift fork, collar, etc). I have used 2wd lo for years now to move really heavy trailers in tight locations(spare your tranny the pain).
