Subject: HELP, 4 x4 transaxle wont lock???? IP: Logged
Message: Hi, this forum seams to hold quite a bit of knowledgable
members so i figured id see if one of you could help me please. i
just recently acquired a 1991 dakota 4 x 4 w/ 5.2 engine. i put
trailmaster 4 inch on it and want to go play in the mud but cant
due to my axles not locking in the transaxle. when i put into 4 lo
the driveline spins but the tires dont. i hear the engine was
recently changed and i found a detent switch and wire running
from the tranaxle near the vacuum modulator up to the top of
the right side fender but its now connected to anything and i
cant find any wire it will connect to. im new to the dodge 4 x 4
so i dont have a clue how the transaxle locks the front. i imagine
its vaccum controlled. please help i can hear the mud calling!!!!

Message: the rear should still work
and the wire and the switch is simply for the indicator lamp in the cab
i used to have a pic around of the exploded view but cant seem to find it
pull the vacuum lines off and then switch the lever from 2wd to 4x4 and see if the lines switch
if they switch then there maybe something stuck ont he actuator
if they do not switch the lines should run back to a switch on the Tcase that switches the vacuum lines when you pull the lever back. They have a tendency to suck a22 and not work correctly
on mine i bypassed all that and mounted some vacuum switches in the cab so i can turn it on and off as i please

Message: Will the front and rear tires spin in 4hi? If they do than you probably have an internal transfer case problem, or maybee just a shifter problem. If the front tires won't spin in 4hi than look at your front differential you will see a vacuum actuator with 2 vacuum hoses and a connector with a couple of wires going into it see if you have vacuum on one of the hoses in 4hi and the other of the hoses in 2wd. if you don't have vacuum than you have a bad vacuum switch on the transfer case or a broken hose somewhere in beween the t-case and the front differential. Check on the passenger side of the engine compartment right next to the exhaust manifold on that side, on my 92 3.9 4x4 the vacuum hoses run right beside of the manifold and got melted one day when i went out on the beach.

Hey Super bee, where did you find this vacuum switch you speak of? I have wanted to do this for awhile as well but could only think of some switch from a climate control board or something. If you could give me some details about it I would really appreciate it. I want to reduce the number of things that can go wrong. Thanks.

Message: Good idea! But you still have the one weak link left, the actuators on the front axle go bad fairly regularly. I've put 2 in my friends Jeep. Luckily my 99 Dak 4x4 doesn't have any of that vacuum crap.

Message: actually i just took 2 pneumatic switches that we have laying around at work and rigged them up to work, you cant just use one directional switch because it need to be able to exhaust the vacuum from one side to actuate the other side
ill see if i can get some pics sometime soon
