Subject: Raising a 91 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a 1991 extended cab 4x4 dakota that I want to put a lift kit on. I would prefer a suspension lift, but have somewhat limited $$$. Currently, the truck has torsion bar suspension. Has anyone got any experience putting a suspension lift on this type of truck? Do all suspension lifts for this truck require upper control arm modifications/conversion? Also, anyone that has experince/photos of just body lifts-I am also interested in that. What other modifications were required with the body lift? What were the largest tires that fit with a 2-4 inch body lift? How did it affect your front end parts' wear?
Any info or websites to check out would be appreciated.
Thanks

Message: Your choices are very limited since there is only 1 suspension lift available for your truck. The Trailmaster DD43 4" kit for the 91-96 Dakota 4x4. It'll cost you about $1500-$1600 if you do the install yourself, but you'll still need to replace the rims and all the "While it's apart" items you'll discover (ball joints, tie-rods, etc...), so that pretty much blows your tight budget. It'll cost you more than $2000 by the time your done. It does require replacing the upper control arms with ones included with the kit. Several years ago, I adapted the kit to fit an 88 Dakota. I have a writeup about the install here. http://www.walt-n-ingrid.com/project_1hidak.html
You can do a 2" body lift cheap, under $100 again if you install it yourself. However with a 91, be prepared to have to replace a cab mount or two.
A good rule of thumb with lift kits, take the total cost of the kit, add 50% and that's the very minimum you should be ready to spend before you even attempt to install it. If you are paying someone else to install it for you, the labor will probably be close to the cost of the kit itself.

Message: Thanks for the info. I had kind of come to that realization after doing some research, but am glad to hear from someone who has actually done the lift on an older Dakota. The underneath is actually pretty good as I put a new frame under it two years ago and replaced all the cab mounts, and sand blasted and painted everything at that time. Anyway, I guess I'll just have to start saving my pennies, and maybe be happy with the body lift for now.
Thanks Again
