Subject: Too Much Torque! IP: Logged
Message: The other night i was up on the mountain just cruisin the logging roads.. I got up to the snow and up to the top. I got to the turn around spot and slid into the not quite ditch and got stuck. I was almost out when my front differential broke clean off the mounts and snapped the front driveshaft. The diff was sitting on my skid plate haha..
I have a 2000 Dakota club cab 4X4 4.7 V8 AT SLT and 31/12.5/15 Toyo MT's
Has anyone else torn the front end right out of their truck? Also the right CV Axle came apart..
I made it 2X4 till i can fix it. I want to do a Dana 44 SAS

Message: i have seen this happen to a couple of dakotas, some luckier than others. one guy broke his, we put a used one in and he broke it a couple days later.....apparently he is very abusive on his truck...he was spinning it in 4high in the snow and it caught.

Message: First time I heard of it on a Dakota but, Here in Montana there are a lot of ranchers with the Diesels that are doing this. Never seen it happen myself and these ranchers claim they had a loaded trailer behind them so I assume they are overloading the trucks and the diesel engine is a bit much for the trucks when it is asked to grunt. I have a cousin rancher that lost the front end twice and the standard trany once, all on warranty.

Message: I've seen it happen quite a few times on 97-99 Dakotas with the front Dana35 IFS center section, but this is the first time with the C205mm in a 2000+. Your front diff has an aluminum housing so it seems very possible. I'm not surprised.
Most often when I here about this happening I hear a common description of what happened. Someone gets stuck, gets a lot of wheel spin while trying to power out and suddenly a front tire grabs traction and grenades the front diff out of the aluminum housing. They don't take kindly to sudden, high spikes in torque.

Suppose that is what happens when stylists design trucks?
You all were talking of independent suspended front ends?

When i broke my front diff this past weekend, i didnt turn it into a piece of wood. but it will be running 4X2 for a while.
its a shame that dodge cant build a good front end. my buddies ford ranger never had this problem.
