Subject: 04 stock 4x4 turning issues, advice? IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I have a 2004 Dak 4x4 4.7L with a full-time transfer case (AWD), only 32,000 miles. My issue is I hear a knocking noise in the front passenger wheel while turning at various speeds. The noise is loud almost like a woodpecker makes, the faster the turn, the more rapid and loud the knock.
I have already replaced the front steering rack assembly & tie-rods twice with new OEM parts. The lower ball joints and sway bar bushings as well with OEM as they had alot of play according to Dodge. Dodge can't figure out whats wrong and keeps guessing parts (i.e. inner axle assembly, wheel bearings, CV joint, etc.). Does anyone know what this issue may be from? The driver side wheel doesn't make a sound.
Also the 4-wheel drive doesn't work properly when turning, the car jerks forward and the wheels skip. While turning you hear rubbing and the car slows down while giving gas, it could be related. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Message: Is this your first 4wd ? That's how it works when turning hard; or do you mean more than should be expected ? I'd suspect the CV joint as most likely for the knocking noise; If still under warranty, make sure you get written documentation that you brought it in for the problem.

Message: This is my first 4wd but the problem is new from previously using 4wd when I got the truck, I just noticed it since its been a while last time I needed it. The knocking probably is the CV joint as you said Kowalski, seeing as the inner axle assembly and joint was replaced with a remanufactured part from an older model year (02-03)since then I had the noise.
I am almost afraid the transfer case is going bad, squeaks going in and out of 4wd and doesn't disengage right away. But the turning problem had me worried. You can hear something rubbing and grinding, slowing the truck down. I know the turning radius is reduced in 4wd, but I can't even make a 30 deg turn without getting the rubbing and skipping of the wheels. The warranty is up on the truck, maybe a 4wd specialist needs to take a look at it? Thanks for the help.
