the four wheel drive works and gets it place but pops out after you drive for a little, any ideas what the problem could be?

How little? Any turns or just strait line?

its a 96 auto trans 5.2 v8 and just pops out going straight foward and backwards

Check your motor, trans, t-case mounts. Might be one broken.

The linkage for the 4x4 shifter could just be out of adjustment. It's not fully engaging and popping free after a little while.
