Subject: 2000 rancho braking front difs??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 QC 4.7 w/3" rancho lift. I have broken 2 front difs at the mounting points (there are 3). I do wheel my truck hard (not anymore!!LOL). It happens because the right side (always the right side) CV joint brakes and then binds up at the dif and snaps the aluminum housing at the mounting points on the of the pumkin. The joint always brakes at the dif, not at the wheel. And it doesn't "brake" per say. The tri pod bearings slip out of the "cup" that they are in. What I need to find out and fix is why this CV joint keeps braking??? I'm not a mechanic so I might not be using the correct names for the parts. There are alot more specifics I give give at request if needed. Has anyone seen a CV joint do this in this manor?? If so, do you have a lift?? I can not post pic's on this site, but would try to e mail some to someone who things they can help.

Tripod joint is at the diff end of the half-shafts. CV joint is at the hub end.
3" suspension lift without differential relocation effectively shortens your half-shafts.
The tripod joint at the diff end is weaker than the CV joint (ball-cage one at the hub end). It pulls apart because the tripod bearings don't seat as deeply in the tripod housing as they did before the lift. When your front end is at full droop, that's when everything adds up and bad things can happen. Also, your shaft joint angles are increased, which puts more strain on them.

Josh, everything you said makes sence. Although, the rancho lift does relocate the front dif down 3". There are 3 extension adaptors, one at each mounting point. Any suggestions on I might repair this??

Did you crank the lift to over 4 inches over stock? Because if you go over that the cv joint angles get steep which causes them to wear quickly and if put under a fair amount of load, to snap. Just a suggestion you might check.

Not with a body lift because you are not changing the suspension at all.

I have the Rancho lift on mine and it also has spacers to go in between the c/v shafts and the stub axles in the front diff in addition to the diff drop brackets.

sounds like you need a welder and some 1/8th inch plate to strengthen your mounts
