Saturday I recovered a Jeep that was trying to recover a stuck Explorer that was towing a trailer.
This was on the Lake Tahoe approach to the Rubicon Trail. We were all part of a volunteer trail maintenance crew with the
Friends of the Rubicon
Climbing a slight hill made up of broken granite the Explorer got stuck, spinning first a front then a rear tire. He dug down through the surface till the rear diff was almost touching it. At first the driver said his "street tires" were the problem until somebody pointed out that he has the same tires I do: Goodyear Wrangler RT/Ss. We aired him down from 32psi to 15psi and he made a little progress but couldn't climb out of the hole he had dug.
A guy in a big rock crawler Jeep with super-squishy tires hooked up to pull him forward and we all thought we'd be rolling again in a minute. The Jeep spun his tires and began to slide off the trail. No progress.
I backed my Dakota (4.7 V8, automatic, full-time 4wd) down the hill and hooked up a strap. Pulled the Jeep that was pulling the Explorer that was pulling the trailer. No drama, no sweat, no tire spinning.
Fun day.
