Subject: No-Slip locker for an 8.25" WITH LSD IP: Logged
Message: I just wanted to give everyone an update on the Powertrax No Slip Lockers. I just installed one in a 2002 Dodge Dakota with factory Limited Slip (LSD, Posi or whatever you want to call it, it is the same thing). I know what you are saying, the same exact thing the sales people and the tech support gurus said at Richmond Gear (aka Powertrax) “ We don’t make a No-Slip for the 2002 Dakota with LSD” but I gave them the part number for a Jeep Liberty with an 8 ¼ Chrysler 29 spline rear end with factory Limited Slip (92-0382-2925) which is the same exact rear end as in the Dodge Dakota 8.25” (10 bolt) rear end (1997 +) with factory LSD. They said thank you and they will update their application charts in the near future. The correct part number if you have an open differential is (92-0382-2905). The installation took me about 3 hours (actual working time including the 1 hour for the liquid gasket to cure) and it was easy, the instructions were pretty clear and the parts fit together just like the manual said, once I received a new set of couplers that is. Must have been a Friday and the machinist decided to crank down a little too hard on the coupler bearing surfaces and caused them to oval out. They are aware of the problem now so any future units should be correct, however check the dimensions before ripping out your side and spyder gears and clutch packs. My truck sat on jack stands for a weekend while they fedexed my new couplers to me. The correct diameter on the coupler bearing surfaces should be 1.495” + or - .001” and round, not oval ha ha. It performs flawlessly on and off road, I have not heard a click, bang, slap or any other gear noise people affectionately describe their detroits making. There are no tire scuffing, chirping or dragging noises either so I am assuming I should have normal tire wear. Off road it is a full locker and performs as an axle with two wheels should, both equally contributing to the cause, unlike my factory nearly open LSD (and I only have 40,000 miles on it). Yes LSD’s do wear out even if they were any good in the first place. Again the correct No-Slip part number for a dodge Dakota 1997+ 8.25” WITH LIMITED SLIP is (92-0382-2925). The correct No-Slip part number for the same rear end WITH AN OPEN DIFF is (92-0382-2905). Hope this helps.

Message: Just wanted to give everyone an update on my locker installation. Just finishing up a decent winter with my new locker and so far it has made a big difference in traction. I have not observed much if any difference in icy road handling, probably because I am either running full time AWD or 4wd so the front is doing a little pulling which prevents the back from getting carried away. I also threw on a set of Toyo Open Country MTR's 285 75R 16's with only a little torsion lift and some light plastic trimming (which I could have avoided if I had only remembered to use my heat gun). Both modifications have made me very happy. I even pulled a full size van out of some decent snow sideways as if he were right behind me getting a regular tow. Not one indication of any slipping going on. Next on my list is tracking down a helical gear LSD for the front. I will keep you posted.

Message: I used Valvoline synthetic gear oil, I am going to change over my transfer case to the same stuff once it warms up here. I may drain the diff and refill it just to see if there is any metal debris

Message: jsut the bulk gear oil we get at work
and a quart i picked up at a store because i didnt get enough
but that extra quart had friction modifier in it
didnt realize it until it was too late
recently i drained the pumpkin and refilled with regular gear oil, the bulk stuff at work, and some leftover valvoline of the same weight
its better, but still sticks
i might do that a few more times to see if it helps

Message: Just so I understand the concept of this locker device... Is it a full locker or on the street does it work like a normal LSD or similar to it? I have an open 8.25 rear end and I would like some kind of locker but I dont want to sacrafice the street end of my truck. A little explination of how it works and feels would be great. Thanks. Dan

Message: Its a full locker but it is syncronized so its a little quieter and smoother on the road than other lockers.

Message: well i was reading the manual for the powertrax today
it says if you have sluggish response use the lightest weight oil recommended by the manufacturer
so sometime im going to pull it all apart, pray it all down with brake cleaner to get the old crap out and replace with some lighter weight than 85-140
maybe some 75-140
