Subject: Leaky Front Diff IP: Logged
Message: I just lifted my 2000 Dakota with the Rancho kit. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not but I have noticed oil stains on my diff on both sides of where the half shafts go into the diff houseing. It only has oil coming out when it is moveing. I checked the level in the diff and it is overflowing the plug. I think that there might be to much fluid in there. I wanted to know what ya'll thought of this and if anyone has heard of it before.

Message: My 95' has had a leak (seep) on the drivers side for the last 10 years. You just have to decide what level of effort you wish to put into it. If it is like mine and is a seep (just enough to make the area wet, but not create any spot on the floor), I will tell you the same thing a GOOD mechanic told me, "Check the level a couple times over the next 6-12 months. If you don't see a noticable loss, chances are it will last for years." Mine has done exactly that.
Bottom Line: If the leak bothers you, fix it. If it doesn't bother you, monitor it. I have yet to actually add any gear oil to my diff. 107K and still doing fine...with the 4" susp lift...and it was seeping several years before the lift was installed.
Everybody has an opinion...

Message: It's only a seep so I am just going to keep an eye on it for now.

Message: Hey Rudy. My ft diff was leaking after my gear change and I added too much much fluid. I also cleaned the oil and dirt off the shafts. Since I changed the diff fluid after the break-in to RoyalPurple and put in the correct amnount no leak! Good Luck..hope you dont have to change those dang seals..they are a bear! Im saving for the Rancho. Did you measure your B4 and after height?

Message: Yeah I did measure the before and after height from the floor to the bottom of the quarter panel I had like 16 1/4 now with the lift and 33's I have 20 1/2 the lift is well worth it. I think my leaking diff justed happend right after I finished putting it on. I don't think one caused the other.
