i have a 92 dak that i did a solid axle swap. used a 79 ford f150 works great, i tried to wheel my dak with the ifs, but wore things out faster then you can say dakota's ifs sucks for hard core off roading. yes the hummer front end stands up, but you are comparing apples to running shoe. the dak front end isn't very beefy.
so do the swap if you want to run larger tires than 35 or if you intend to put it throught it's paces.

I DROVE A STOCK M151 MILITARY JEEP WITH FORDING EQ. THRU 4' OF MUD AND IT NEVER GOT STUCK BUT THAT LITTLE 4 BANGER WAS JUST A BUZZIN! A LITTLE MORE THEN I AM NOW...............
