Subject: MUD TIRES SUCK IN SAND!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently went out on a small wheeling trip. The trails were mostly sand and dirt, My tires are Dunlop Mud Rovers 31X10.50R15 All they do is dig for the south. Anyways obviously they weren't made for sand but man they are terrible in the sand. Are all mud tires like this. I know airing down would help but i was wheeling with 2wd Ford F150s and they easily out did me going through it. Though once it came to hill climbs he he he. I had to pull them up...

Anyways just wondering what is good for mud AND sand. Hard tire to come by, preferably in the same size as now.

Looks like your searching for the best of 2 opposite worlds. Normally a skinny tire is used in mud to dig down gripping the bottom. And normally a wide tire is used in sand to stay a float on top. The only problem comes when the mud is too deep and your up past the bottom of your doors in mud. I personnaly prefer the wider tires for all situations. If I were to stay with a 31" tire, I would look into a BFG A/T or M/T in a 325/60R15 (basically a 31x12.50). Would need an 8-10" wide rim though (recommend an 8" rim to make the tire a touch narrower and taller). I think this would work well.

Yup, mud tires bite, sand tires float. Best for sand is wide, little or no tread, and air down. You could find some well worn street tires in your size easily and mount on spare rims for sand use.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I have the same Mud Rovers tires 285/75/16. Great in mud and snow or general 4-wheeling. I’ve been in some sand this week. No No good. Like the other guys said you need wider and different tread. I'll be going wider when I go to 35s. By the way, how many miles on yours.

how much sand are you talking? I've driven on paths before that are mix or spots of gravel, sand and dirt. I have not had any problems.

In really sandy (ie beach type sceneario), you should let alot of the air out. I drove on the beaches in NC in my old 95 dakota 4x4 with bfg AT tires and did not have any problems at all AFTER letting out air and going to about 12 psi. I ran up to 50 PSI in winter (indiana) and usually 32-35 PSI other times of the year.

If you live anywhere near kure beach in NC, take a drive on the beach - last I was there was 3 years ago. You'll see any kind of vehicle there. AWD subarus, 80s chevys with swampers, buggys, hummers, etc. Any kind of tire you can think of -passenger, mud, AT, APT, etc. The key, let most of the air out.

I've only saw 1 person get stuck and that was because he did not let air out of tires and vehicle overheated - yes, it can happen. Ram 2500 towed him out.

I currently have michelin's on my 02 dak, no problems as of yet, but then again, I haven't driven on any beach in this truck. Just alot of dirt, dirt/sand and gravel.

Yea, I agree with flooring it in sand, I put my truck to the frame multiple times, but it was more me being stupid than the truck itself (got overconfident) But I'll be driving alot at Silver Lake so I need a good tire for that, AND I really don't want BFG A/ts cause EVERYONE has them, Though they are a good tire, I just want to be different which is why i drive a dakota...
I am now considering Nitto Terra Grapplers, I'm lifting my truck 7" (4" trailmaster and 3" body) hopefully 35" tires will fit, I kinda doubt it though...

Good reasons there paul. Just don't go for any futura tires from pepboys (made by cooper tire). I owned one set and they were crappy. uneven wear, didn't last nearly as long as the road warranty.

I loved the AT's but they are not practical for my driving habbits of today. You are right, everyone has them.

I wish hoosier tire still made passenger vehicle tires. Excellent tires, good grip, great price point, performed as well and better in many cases to the bigger national brand tires (bfg, bridgestone, michelin, etc). They made a hell of an off road tire some years ago. And unless you are from the midwest or are really into the drag type races you've probably never heard of hoosier tires much less had some on a vehicle.

My first set of hoosier tires were 14" ones for my first truck, 1985 ranger 2wd it had 13" and i wanted something bigger. I paid $92 for set of 4 mounted, balanced and installed in spring 1995. After I got my dakota and moved out of my parents house, I gave the ranger to my dad. He drove it for another couple of years on the same tires. Before it was time to get new tires, they had around 65k miles (were 40k mile tire).

I really like the michelin's i have on my 02 QC 4x4. When it's time for a new set, I'm going to get another set of michelins. They are a good all around tire.

I guess now that i've been looking around at tires and, Offroad Adventures Magazine also recomended the Truxus STS tire... I'm not sure when I'll have the 7" of lift, during the summertime obviously but more than likely later on towards fall... My question with a torsion crank and a 2-3" body lift be enough to fit 33/12.50s?????
