Subject: Is there interest in a bolt on sas kit? IP: Logged
Message: I have now done solid axle conversions on two dakota's and I believe I can manufacture a bolt on kit to do this for around $4600-$5000 including axle, suspension, shackle brackets, shock brackets, springs, steering box and all associated hardware. Both conversions were done using D44 front axles, jeep front suspension (with assorted parts from other lift kits), stock 97-99 remanufactured steering boxes and linkage... the only parts that had to be custom manufactured were the spring and shock brackets for the front and the shackle hangers for the rear. Unfortunately I only had access to 5x5.5 front hubs so I had to use 6x4.5 to 5x5.5 adapter plates and then change my rims but the setup landed me about 5.5 inches in the front and about 4 in the back.
I wont even be considering producing this kit for public use until I have a good amount of wheeling time on mine and know it wont break like a certain other kit that was tried by some members on this site.
Is there interest in this at said price or is it out of the practical price range, unfortunately I cant think of any way to make it any cheaper. Feel free to email me for details on the kit, if I get into any more detail here, it will be too easy to copy, not that you could do it any cheaper, the first sas conversion cost me just over $8500

Message: Sed8ed,
Is this (will this) be specific to the Gen III or do you know if there is much difference between the other generations? We know through Walt's work that the Gen I & II are basically the same. I personally don't know what the major (structural) changes are between the Gen II & III. If the mounting points on the frame measure out the same, this would fit them all? That would be great for all concerned.
You may REALLY be on to something here. A simple swap being available would make these rigs a hot item in the used truck market. Good luck on this!

Message: you are going to include the axle? why not just put a requirement in for a certain axle (or axles) and let people pick that up themselves? some may want new, others old to refurb and it'll give them the oppotunity to change gears and install lsd/lockers.

Message: Just be sure you protect yourself from lawsuits. It doesn't matter if you sold a few to guys here or to anybody wanting one. By law you are a business. You will have no control of he welds others make nor the quality of the other work required by them. I would think 5 million in insurance is a low figure now days. As an example, I got sued plowing snow 20 years ago. A guy who had heart surgery had a heart attack walking into a business I plowed and fell on the store parking lot. This was observed by others but he claimed he fell causing him to have this heart attack> he won in court as they could not prove what really happened . He got 1,500,000 plus all court and lawwer costs. This totaled well over 2,000,000.I think you get my point here.It will help a bunch if you get signed releases from all customers releasing you from any responsibility PRIOR TO DELIVERY OF KITS but it will not totally stop lawsuit posibilities. Oh. Thank god I had 3,000,000 in commercial insurance. You got to figure this as a cost also in your venture . Good luck.
So many problems .... so little time

Message: While I have always wanted to produce a kit myself, I don't believe it would be cost effective. Since the average owner here balks at the $1200+ price tag on an IFS suspension lift, I don't believe you'll get enough demand for a $5000 SAS kit, to make it really worth the effort to produce.

Message: I emailed you and got no reasponse. I think you should just sell a braket kit like they do for toyotas. Most who do a straight axle swap are most likely to do the work themselfs. Just sell a reverse shackle setup so customers can decide on there own springs, ect...
