Message: Roast the tires. My 4x4 with limited slip lays two nice patches of rubber (right one a little darker then the left because its the drive wheel). Without limited slip you should only see one.

Message: Better Idea find a patch of dirt. It is easier to spin tires and see the marks.

Message: If you jack both rear wheels up off ground and turn them by hand limited slip=both turn same way.Open diff=wheels turn diff ways.Be carefull.I tried out 4.7 daks with open diffs before I got mine and it seems to break both wheels loose anyway! But highly recommend lsd.

Message: Just because both tires spin does not mean there is a traction device. My Jeep with open carriers always spins both in dirt or sand. If you really want to use this method, getting the tires spinning then turning sharp as though doing a donut would probably do it - if both keep spinning, you have an LSD. You need to get it ti the point that one tire has more traction than the other, either due to weight or friction, in order to tell.
The other way is to put one tire on pavement and the other on dirt, and light 'em up like that. My LSD will even chirp the inside tire during light acceleration in a sharp turn - that would also be a telltale.
Note that if these tests don't indicate an LSD, you may still have on, just may have worn out clutches (Trac-Loc).

Message: Try this for a test, find an empty road and pull half way off. Now that you have 1 tire on the road and one off give her the juice. If they both spin great, if not you have an open diff. Mike
