There's a hill nearby my area next to a mall where people like to try and climb it with their trucks. It's pretty steep and it levels off maybe twice before it continues upward. Last year, I climbed it a few times with my 95 3.9 Dak. I did this in the summertime so of course it was dry and easier to control. Well, I've got a 93 5.2 4x4 now, extended cab. The hill is pretty muddy, but I see *tons* of tire tracks going up this hill and so I gave it a try two nights ago. Sadly enough I only made it halfway up before I lost momentum. I carefully reversed and turned around to make my way down shamefully, lol.

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm unexperienced when it comes to these things...What kind of truck does it take to get up a huge hill such as this when it's all muddy? I don't want to hear anyone suggest a different truck, lol. I've got some decent offroad tires.

alot of things come into play, Tires of course, speed always helps, keeping the tires cleaned out so they can grip, lockers so all the tires are actually spinning, also next time try sawing the steering wheel back and forth.

lockers...what do I need to know about them? Brand, type? Price range? I just might consider them.

MOST PEOPLE GO WITH DETROIT, YOU CAN DO A SEARCH ON DAKOTAUSA AND FIND JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW, I THINK IF YOU CHANGE TO 4.56'S FRONT AND BACK AND A LOCKER YOU LOOKING AT AROUND $800-$900 BUCKS, I THINK.

Unfortunately 4.10:1 gears are the lowest available for the 7 1/4" front differential in our dakota's up to '96. I've had good luck with mine combined with 33X12.50 BFG M/T's and a Powertrax no-slip locker(cheaper and easier to install) in the rear. Although I'm sure the Detroit is still the strongest way to go.

I'm not getting the part about turning around on the hill. Can't be all that steap or slipery to do that unless you was at a point that leveled off.

So many problems .... So little time

I was almost halfway up the hill....and I hit a leveled off point, at which I attempted to continue up. After failing miserable, I slowly rolled backwards, reversed to the side, and drove back down. So yeah, it was right above a leveled off point. I'm going to give the hill another try in a week or so, cause it hasn't rained nearly at all.

The 5.2 (in decent shape) should make plenty of torque for this kind of thing. The problem is always torque application.

You need to keep the rpm's above 2K'ish. But probably less than 4k.

Use 4low.

If it's slippery and you don't at least have LSD, it's not going to work. All your torque will be transferred to the tire with least traction. Detroit TruTrak would be your best option. I don't like lockers in vehicles that might like to turn corners.

The front diff is open, so it's almost useless. There doesn't seem to be many options for us to correct that.

If one tire is spinning, try applying a little bit of brake. That helps to balance traction side to side and gets some torque to the dead side.

Sounds like you slowed down or stopped on the level parts.
Hammer down son! I have climbed a lot of hills in crappy tires.
