Subject: Wheel Bearing Question IP: Logged
Message: Hi everyone,
Does anyone know if you can pull the halfshaft on a GenIII Dak and run with just the bearing or does the shaft and nut hold the bearing together? Please help. Half shaft wrecking front end.

Message: That's a question best put to a Dodge mechanic. But looking in the books and FSM, you should be able to do this. Just do it on both sides, because unless you're in 4WD, the remaining half shaft will still turn the front diff, and the side with the missing shaft will turn at twice the speed. Might not be good for the diff.

Message: Hub and bearing are a unit.
The 2WD Daks have a similar setup, just no splines cut in the hub/bearing assembly to take a shaft.

OBIO3 is absolutely right.
Yes, the 2WD DAkota has a similar setup, but there is a spindle shaft coming out from the steering knuckle that supports the bearing/hub unit and gives it the strength to support the vehicle weight and handle all the stresses of turning, braking, etc.
The bearing/hub of the 4x4, however, is only held to the knuckle with three bolts. Its steering knuckle doesn't have a spindle to support the bearing/hub, and uses the axle shafts for that purpose. It requires a shaft be in place so you don't snap that hub assembly first time you hit a good bump, and scratch the paint underneath the vehicle with the road.
