Message: Well after a nice month of the 4.56 gears in the REAR diff, I finally did it in my FRONT diff. Now I can use 4WD again! :)
Here's some install pix...
WOrd of advice. Get the FULL install kit. i bought the MINOR install kit. Had to get beairngs at dealer. They are DEALER ONLY On the 2003 Dak, that's for sure!
Had to leave my Dak in the garage for a week because AutoZone sold me a bearing but it didn't fit the front Pinion :(
It is all good now. 4.56 gears are well worth it. It cost me approx $800 for Ring/Pinion kits on both axles, and a LSD for the rear as well.

Message: What front end do you have. I looked at my tag in the glove box and it says 205mm. I am assuming that is the 8 inch IFS. I would like to do the 4.56 gears as well but need some help. Thanks

Message: I think that is what they called it.
accuautoparts.com has gears and descriptions of the axle so you know what one you have.
The gears were well worth it!

Message: Hey GraphiteDak how about getting that front end out. Any tips since I don't have a manual. It looks like your wheels are still on. Also does the front have the adjusters for the carrier position.. My kit has some very thick shims. Hum.
I finished my 4.56 in the rear end today. Ya know a funny thing...front shaft removed since mine is AWD and the truck won’t move in AWD mode...go figure. Put in 4hi to turn around to put in garage. Now to the front.
Thanks CC

Message: CC,
Let us know how she runs when your done, I have the AWD as well and plan on going with 4.56s sometime soon too.
What kits did you end up buying? And how much if you don't mind telling? Did you change your LSD or stay with the stocker?

Message: I really wanted OEM. So I worked with Dennis at 4wheelparts. He got me OEM AAM 8" for front and Chrysler 8.25 for the rear. Got gears and master kits for $500.00 I’m staying with stocker for now since truck is AWD. The gears installed and setup easy. I think they were good quality.

Message: Hey Craig. I thought of something. I bet the AWD version uses a spider gear system in the t-case to distribute to the two axles so when one was disconnected, it just spun the disconnected shaft without moving the rear shaft. Same thing as if you jack up one rear tire on an open diff. I think your 4HI/4LO locks the transfer case.
As far as the front axle went. I think all I needed to remove was the driver side bearing from the hub along with the brake rotor, etc. That gives just enough room to pop the half shaft off of the axle shaft that goes into the diff. Then remove the 6 or so bolts and drop the entire exle, popping the passenger side shaft out. Just do the reverse to install.
The front carrier used shims. My kit didn't give me any, so I reused myold ones which may have left my backlash a little wide. But no noise at all from the diff.
None of you will regret the 4.56 gear change :)

Message: Thats right on the AWD G.D...thats how it can be AWD without binding the driveline. Locking the t-case in 4HI won't hurt a thing with the front shaft out as you are just driving in 2WD.

Message: Thanks, this will be my weekend project. So far I’m just babying the truck since no front driveshaft. It smoked the tires just backing into the garage when the front tires catch on the lip of the driveway. WOW. I can’t wait till they are broke in. I'll report in a few weeks. GraphiteDak...Thanks for the advice on the front removal. And taking one for the team!

Message: Hmm. This one may need asnwering from a gen I or II Dak owner.
But on my Gen III there is NO NEED to recalc the speedo. My speedo sensor is on the ring gear, which takes the speed off of the rotations of the WHEELS not the drive shaft like older vehicles. So the ONLY time I need to recalc the speedo is for tire changes and my SuperChips programmer would do that.
As for mileage. I think it stayed pretty close.
Deffinitely no worse in the city that is for sure. May be BETTER.

Message: Interesting Graph, my highway mileage is about the same, but around town, it seems as if I am filling up alot more than before. Still, no regrets, if I wanted good gas mileage I would have bought a Honda!

Message: How much higher would the RPMs be if I went from 3.55 open diff. to 4.56 LSD on a 3.9 v6? I'm thinking about gearing it and if the rpms don't go to much higher then I will go to 4.56. I hardly ever get on the interstate as well. 2000 RPM = 65 mph. Thanks

Use their calulators.
If you are at 2K at 65 already, then it would be over 2500 I am sure.
Mine was pretty low before.
Went form 1700 in OD to 2200 now. AT 60MPH.
If you have smaller tires than my 29's, then you may get close to the same results with 4.10's.
