How can i tell what my gear ratio is in my front diff? My rear is 3.92. Also I am looking to upgrade to 4.10 lockers or even 4.56.
I got a 99, any one else upgrade there diff?

Yeah...I would hope its the same or you got some problems. :)
What I was wondering is...what IS the front diff. I know Dak's either have an 8.25 or 9.25 rear (I have the 9.25) but what is the front diff (in Gen3's anyway)?

Commonly called 8" corporate; also sometimes referred to in metric terms.

A 99 would have an IFS variation of the Dana 35. The C205mm or 8" didn't come until 2001.
87-96 = Chrysler 7 1/4"
97-00 = Dana 35
01+ = C205mm (sometimes called 8") also used in the 03+ Ram 1500 4x4

Gunner - I didn't read the second part of Walt's post listing '00 as that too since he usually seems to know what he posts pretty well. The gears that went into my '00 4x4 were labeled 8"; definitely NOT labeled Dana 35. I've seen them called 8" more often than 205mm, but thats probably the official name. Most gear sites I checked out, you put in the info for your truck, then they list the available gears for that year.

I double checked - you will also find '00 listed as Chrysler 8" IFS, just another way of saying corporate 8". This is for all motors in '00, Walt gave the right info for '99; that's the cut off year.

Yep, my bad.
They switched over to the C205mm in 2000 when they switched to Rack & Pinion. Must of had an old timers moment there because I knew that. Don't know why I was thinking 2001.
No lockers or limited slip available for the 7 1/4" Open diff only. I don't know if I would put a locker in there, the 7 1/4" isn't exactly known for it's strength. It's the smallest of the 3 diffs used in the Dakota. I believe a Dana 35 has a 194mm ring gear and I've seen several of those spit the pinion out of the back of the housing while off-roading. There used to be a chepo, off-brand, aftermarket limited slip for the 7 1/4", I bought one back in the mid 90's, but it ate the clutches shortly after installing it and I've never been able to find a replacement for it. Don't recall the name and the shop I got it from has no info about it in any of the catalogs now. I ended up swapping back in the stop open carrier.
