Message: Anyone know what size the rear axle is on my 93 2wd dakota ive heard its something like a chrysler 8.8 but im not sure. any details on this would be helpful. ring gear? axle shaft size? tube dia? any companies make a spool or locker for it?
Message: It’s probably the Chrysler 8¼” rear. They used those in most of the V6 and all V8 trucks from 87-96. Detroit makes a locker for it.
However, there is a small chance it could be a 7¼”, which was used in most of the 4cyl and a few V6 (though uncommon) 2wd trucks (it was determined by which payload package the truck was ordered with). All 4x4s had the 8¼” rear.
Message: The 8¼” was 27-spline from 87-96.
87-90 had a 30 3/4" or 30 13/16" shaft length (I’ve seen both lengths listed in documentation but only one # is correct, I believe 30 3/4") with a 5-lug flange. Both the left and right side used the same shaft.
91-96 was the same but with a 6-lug flange. They are interchangeable if you ever wish to switch to a 5-lug bolt pattern.
In 97 it was changed to 29-spline but the left and right shaft lengths changed. Right was 30 1/4" and left was 33 3/8"
The 7 1/4" was a 25 spline and was a 30 3/8" length from 87-96 with both left and right shafts the same. Again the difference was the bolt pattern 87-90 & 90-96.
