Subject: Ball Joints or tires????
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 Dakota Sport 4x4 v8
I have notice that I have a slight hum on sweeping turns. As my truck is outside of the ball joint recall (although it has the same ball joint), I am trying to figure out if the problem is tire vibration or ball joints - or how to determine.
I have 33x10.5 BFG MTs with a 3" BL. I notice a hum / slight steering movement on one particular sweeping curve near my house (35mph curve in the road). How can I determine if it is my ball joints? Is the recall on the upper or lower joints, what is an easy and effective way to determine? I have jack up the front wheels and tried to determine movement..not sure that I notice any, and that is why I am wondering if it may be the lugs on the tires.

thanks, dk

If you only notice it on one certain stretch of road, I might write it of to that stretch of road...

I believe the recall was on the upper ball joint. To check yours, you should be jacking the front one wheel at a time from under the lower control arm so the suspension does not droop. Once the wheel is in the air, grab the tire (top & bottom) and attempt to wiggle it. You should not have any movement. Do the same side to side by grabbing the front and back. Check both sides. if you are still unsure, I would have a reputable alignment shop in your area check it for you.

Hope this helps
