Message: Has anyone had a problem with a bad u joint of some sort in the steering shaft inside the truck? When making a right turn there is almost a pop in the joint and i have deffinitely noticed the lack and delayed feedback from turning the wheel. If anyone has replaced this joint or knuckle let me know. Also i need to replace the front axle diff seal.. itsa leaking. I can confirm the answer to a front end noise on the passenger side. I tore my brakes apart and found the clip to locate the pads in the piston rusted out so its floatingm but when applying the brakes and riding over bumps the noise is gone. nyone else with either of there problems?

Message: Upper ball joint possibly? I just dropped mine off for the recall work 1hr ago because i was hearing a clunking noise going over bumps and turning. The other day I grabbed the front right front wheel and there was about 1/2 inch of play in it. Last thing I need is for the wheel to fall off when pulling my trailer in August.

Message: The service manual for my 2001 shows a steering coupler that looks almost like a U-joint. It appears to be on the passenger side of the firewall, but it's not clear. Pull the carpet back and take a look.

Message: Try turning the wheel while the truck is stopped. If it still pops it's probably a tie rod end. Jack up each front tire individually and put your hands at 9:00 and 3:00 on the tire and try to turn the wheel. If there is too much free play, it's most likely a tie rod end.

Message: well i can confirm with all of your input, no one got it right. It turns out the clunk when turning is the shaft and coupler going into the rack. 171 bux for the dealer only part, no troubles with 50 bux to get it installed. What a beautiful thing. I do have 33's on mine and all my problems are gone. The front diff seal was also dealer only. She's running like a "RED BULL." No ball joint problems after the recall adjustment, no leaks, no clunks, the only noise is the sound of my squealing 33's and the flomaster 40 series roaring with no tailpipes.

Message: Just yesterday I got my truck back from the dealer for my similar complaint. I was feeling a clunking and popping noise from the front end through the steering column, brakes, and accel. pedal. At 34,500 miles on my 03 4x4 SXT I just could not take it any more.
At first the dealer told me they could not feel of hear any problems. I told them I could not stand the clunking and that certified techs should have no problem finding the cause. Later that day they called me back and said that they needed to have the front end tech come out and fix the problem. 8 techs and 37 miles to find the problem and only 2 said they heard the popping and clunking noise.
The dealer ended up replacing the lower intermidiate shaft in the steering assembly. So far so good. The steering is more stiff, no noises or clunking, and much more precise.
