Subject: Silver Lake Sand Dunes IP: Logged
Message: I live in Illinois and have heard many people talk about the dunes in Michigan. How is it? Cost? Is 4WD required? About how long of a drive from Chicago? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Message: Silver lake is great, all you need is a State park sticker for michigan and a Orv sticker. The usual flag for dunes is needed also. Other than that all you need is gas money and the essentials. In state resident is $24 for state and $16.25 for orv. Out of state they raise the prices to 29 and 20 I believe. As far as the ride probably about 3-4 hours...

Message: Thanks a lot for your help Dale. So are you saying that I would have top pay $49 (20 + 29)? Most of my buddies all have 4WD trucks but a few have 2WD. Is 2WD safe on the dunes? Also I heard that they check your exhaust to make sure it's not too loud. Do they really do that or is it just random checks? Is there a boat launch around or can you just launch jet-skiis straight off the beach?
Your answers are much appreciated,
Bob

Message: I havn't been out their in awhile but with a 2wd truck you may have some trouble with the bigger steeper hills but you can still have a blast out there. Having a locker or at least a limited slip would make driving on the dunes a blast but if not it's still doable. Heck i've seen Pontiac Grand Prix's (fwd) out their, obviously they weren't driving on the big dunes but they were out there. I'll be out their in the next couple of weeks, hope to see ya there. Exhaust wise, never heard of them expecting them, if they did check it would be to see if the catylitic converter was still on the truck, Makes the truck a whole lot louder without the cat. Well thats all ive got. Hope you have a blast. Also one tip...
An easy way of getting unstuck from sand is if your not to burried you can use the floor mats of your truck to act like solid ground. This also works great with mud, Obviously scrubbing your floormats clean is alot cheaper than paying a tow truck driver. TTYL

Message: I've been going their for the last 8-10 years, sorry but unless you got a big engine and paddles on the rear forget taken your 2 Wheel drive. My front diff wasn't engaging and I couldn't even get up the trail leading in. Make sure to drop your air pressure done to 12-18 psi a little lower in the rear just don't corner to hard and roll the tire off the rim
